Which boots?

Hoping that Santa might see fit to get me some new boots this year. Not really sure what to ask for though. Don't want to pay a fortune, but want a decent pair. Don't really want a very tall pair, maybe 6" or 8". Meindl seem to be in most online shops it seems these days but I don't know much about them. Harkila do some too, although I've heard mixed reports on those. The Jack Pyke ones are keen price-wise, but are they as good quality?

Open to suggestions.

Altberg factory shop are in Richmond North Yorks , not far from Cumbria , often have sale items or seconds ( slight marks ) and can be picked up for sensible prices .

Have a look at the Lowa military range. Some excellent boots. Lowa Mountain (short leg) and Lowa Combat (high leg) are two really good pairs of boots without all the fancy frills. Nice and warm in winter, stable and Goretex lined.

i only get a year out of boots due to wearing them everyday on the hill, but lowa are by far the best i've tried i'm now on my third pair

I always wear Meindl Dovre Extreme (like a thousand other people, so not very creative of me) and they have always been outstanding.

My Meindl's are 12 years old. They do about 50 days work a year. I look after them badly, treating them once a year to a proper clean and waxing. They are still waterproof despite the abuse. When they finally give up which can't be far away I will be replacing them with the same brand.

You cannot beat these boys.

As above.

Just out of interest, has anyone tried the Chiruca dogo boa boots with the easy on wire rachet lacing system?

Meindl Glokner are fantastic and easy to put on and take off but, if you’re going to be stood about, on a peg or waiting with you rifle on sticks, the sole is very stiff and this makes my feet ache. And that’s with a added insole. Otherwise it’s the Lowas that others are recommending. Either are a excellent boot.

personally I got fed up with paying £100s on boots that were disappointing in both quality and their waterproofing claims, 3 years ago I got a brand new pair of Altberg defenders off eBay (between £50-£80 odd quid on the milsurp sellers), extremely comfortable, very durable boots. They make no claims on waterproofing reliance with goretex (they're unlined and dry out inside quicker as a result) but keep them clean with ledergris and you'll not get wet. For completely dry warm feet I wear Sealskin socks underneath (also milsurp about £15). Now got 2 pairs of the boots and alternate them, still going strong. Haix do a gortex lined military boot on eBay at around the same price if thats really a must.

Have a search for Hanwag GTX Special Forces boots. I got mine 4 years ago from a supplier in Cumbria, they are used 3 days a week on the hill and still keep my feet warm and dry. They should be around the £140 mark. Best boots I have had and I will replace them with the same when they eventually wear out. Dave
