Close Encounter of the Coyote kind

I am very lucky to be able to travel to USA couple of times a year to hunt Coyote's.

Got seven this last trip.....including this one......

I stopped to speak to rancher about some ground opposite his spot,he confirmed it was government land so I was good to go!
After parking the truck I looked up at the hill on my left, it was going to be a good climb.
I walked up the steep hill to find a good spot for calling I was over the hill (nearly am as well!!) and managed to find somewhere to sit with good views in front and to my right, the bit that I was on fell away to my left after about 12-14 yards( notice proper measurements!) I set up the caller by my feet as I normally do.

After just five minutes I caught sight of Coyote running hard coming from in front of me a little to my left.
Moved the rifle and bipod sticks and got settled in my seat (it is very low canvas chair just keeps your bum of the ground).
Caller still going and then he appeared still running hard but ten yards away!and coming straight for me (not really he was coming for the call!)
My reaction kicked in and I dropped to my left off the seat and fired(safe shot as plenty of background) missed! but he did not miss me he touched my elbow with one of his feet as he went by!
Well I stood up and fired again as he went down the hill away from me, missed, reloaded and managed to drop him stone dead at just around 200 yards as he ran away on flat going straight away.
That was to close fo me.I was sweating and out of breath, think I must have held my breath until the last shot got him!

Do you ever take both shotgun and rifle to the stand with you? The shotgun loaded with BB or #4 Buck does provide a solution those close in and fast moving shots.

Cant say I have ever made contact - but did have one skid to to stop 4 feet in front of me once. I missed that shot, even with a shotgun, but made up for it once he had cleared the distance a bit.

Beat me to it . I started taking a 12 gauge along after missing more than a few yotes up close . I used to hunt coyotes with a good friend , now gone , for many years . We'd usually sit back to back and call . Every now and then one would manage to sneak in without being seen , it was usually a bit intense for a second or two lol . The Rem 870 with #4's worked great out to about 40 yards .
