The biggest deer of all,the moose.

My Swedish mate sent a pic of his friend that has taken a once in a lifetime bull and isnt it a good one too.
And as the mate wrote "the rifle, 6,5x55, Carl gustaf Sporter."

Hi John

Looks a cracker for sure!
As more details of the hunt and how it unfolded become available would you please share?

if hr angled the mount wright the antlers would hold a shite load of fruit, that is a cracker. does make me wonder if i need more than a 243 in uk?
shakey

Perhaps its just the photograph but it doesn't look like a particularly large Älg (Moose) to me. Just the same it's a large animal and would be a devil of a job to extract and larder if on your own.

If you put a suitable 6.5 bullet in the vitals it will kill just like a 308/30-06. Alot of elk are shot with 6.5x55 here each year. The only disadvantage that is often quoted is lack of reaction to shot, although this is not limited to just the 6.5 and why many prefer 8 & 9.3 mm cartridges for elk.

You are way off the mark there 8x57.

All true but after I rolled my own bull moose with a 6.5x55 I really saw the limitations of the calibre.

Cracking beast.
I would say a very good moose for Sweden.

You are spot on,it is indeed a cracker bull.

Sod it....

After dealing with roe for guts of 15 years or so then last two at reds and finding out about them !

Keep it!

Unless it’s in a field where tractor can get to it!😂

The. You watch likes of Donnie Vincent etc in the USA shoot big weight mammals and back packing meat & antlers out in maybe 3 or 4 outings back n forth !

Then I realize I really am a pussy & not fit in any way or shape of the word

I think some people do not realise the difference between Moose in Alaska and Moose in Sweden/Finland. North American Moose can grow huge antlers, whilst the European species are no where near the same size antlers. Having said that the Moose in the photo is a very good head for Sweden.

I was aware that North American moose were usually much larger than Scandinavian moose but to my eye the photograph just doesn't suggest that this is a particularly large animal. I'm sure that Jagare and some other site members have posted photographs previously that really indicate the true size of these animals and the tremendous efforts needed to move them to the larder when you've been fortunate enough t o shoot one.
I think Jagare at one time posted pictures of him using his iron horse timber drag to lift and move a moose that he had shot or was shot by one of the other members of his shooting club, and I've also seen photographs of larger timber forwarders to transport shot animals.

While living in northern Alberta had a bull regularly come into my back yard knocking over bird feeders and eating the seed !
We had the same problem with a Bull , he'd consume about a 20 lb bag of sunflower seeds in one go . I eventually moved it to a higher post . He still kicked at it to get seed , but at least he couldn't empty it in one sitting ................... we ate him eventually , you eat my stuff , I eat you , fair trade .
