.223 rebarreling

Hi All
Just wondering what other calibers a Tikka T3 could be rebarreled into?
The first that comes to mind is .300 Blackout, but what else?

Thanks
Andy

6x45, 25x45, 277wlv are some goodies.

I can shoot 105gr A-max @2500fps very accurately in my 8" twist 6x45. Just run .223 brass through the 6x45 dies and you're good to go.

For what purpose? Deer or vermin?
If the latter what about 20 Tactical or Practical. Both cracking long range vermin rounds.

Ok, but more info.
Currently have a .223, .243 and a slot for a 6.5mm of somesorts.
The .223 barrel isn't in the best condition, however, it can group better than I can.
So, do I scrap the .223 and fill the 6.5mm slot or make something interesting out the .223 even if it means putting in for a variation.

Depends, if it is a good action, trigger and stock you like them rebarrel. If it’s not then scrap and scratch your 6.5 itch. Is a great calibre for Fox, deer and target. I use my 6.5x47 for everything.

How old is the rifle and how did it get ito a state of having a barrel in bad shape -but that still shoots???~Muir
Its shot less that 200 rounds over its life and I never took the mod off, all my fault :(
The end of the barrel is very pitted and a little of what I can see in is as well.
I haven't had it bore scoped yet, but just looking at the worst

Leaving the mod on will do that. The previous owner of my 222 had done that. The damage was in a line along the top of the barrel. Didn’t appear to bad to the naked eye. However a good clean and bore scope showed the true horror.
It is wearing a different barrel but same calibre.
I have a 20 Tactical on a Sako action. If I was starting from scratch I would probably go for a 20 practical as you just use a bushing die for reloading.

There is an over emphasis these days to judge a barrel on how it looks instead of how it shoots. My 1899 BSA Liught Express rifle in 303 was devoid of rifling for the first four inches of the barrel and what remained was 'brown and round" -yet it shot Winchester factory 303 into an inch and a half at 100 yards. The fellow I sold it to still shoots it.

If the rifle still shoots better than you can hold, shoot it til it doesn't. Don't bother getting it scoped. Don't wring you hands or lose sleep. Just shoot and be confident in the rifles' ability to deliver the goods. When it quits doing that, and I suspect that will take some time, think about rebarreling. JMHO~Muir

I had an old BSA CF2 in 243 that the first six inches or so of rifling gone. Still shot around 1 MOA the best it ever did was half MOA. That was out to 300 yards.

Hi Rory, are you single loading these? The c.o.l must be pretty long.

Hi Toby

No, I'm was seating them very deep to 2.36" COAL to fit the Sako 75 mag. They shot very well with the 8 twist barrel.

It would be nicer if I was able to seat them out to 2.45" where they'd be touching the rifling.

I've tried some 95gr SMK's recently that @JockStalk gave me with Viht N133 which isn't ideal, even with 80gr bullets. Very good accuracy but fills up the case too much and velocities low.

I'd like to try N120 or even N130 eventually.

The rifle has been fantastic on roe deer for the last 2 years with 62gr GS Custom bullets @3350fps MV.

All the best,

Rory

You'll never recoup the cost of having it re-barrelled. Sell it as a 'project' or continue shooting it yourself. Alternatively chop-off and re-thread the muzzle to get rid of the pitting, but you sound like you want something different.

I know, that's why I wanted to know what else I could turn it into.
I really need to get it bore scoped, its only had 150-200 rounds through it. I got a box of Lapua brass with the rifle and still have 40 unfired! Must have had some left over fired brass from the previous rifle, so it really is low round count.

Its only a 20" barrel to start with, so anything cut off is going to be a bit short? But then it'll need a re proof.... so no change out of 150?

Some may say I'm too honest, but I am :)

If it was me, rebarrelto a .20 Prac - it uses 223 brass & except for 1 die, everything else
Get a 6.5 Creedmoor & sell the 243
You will only need the 2 rifles for everything you can think of

The 243 us only 3 months old and there's a 6 month wait for a left hooker creed.
