Head space checking

Just pm me so I don’t forget

hi sir,

thank you for trying to help.

the old spring that's in the bolt now is a 14mm long thin gauge and is 2.85mm dia.

the new spring from gmk is a thicker gauge wire and 12mm long and only 2.8mm dia.

thank you

bob.

Bob if you could measure the wire diameter as it sounds the same as a Barnard spring (copy of Sako extractor) if it is I’ve one I can post to you.

At the risk of coming across as a pedant, an ignoramus, or (possibly) both, may I have leave to wonder whether in this thread the words ejector and extractor are being used as if they were the same thing?

As long as the cases ping out reliably (from the ejector), be it by a few inches, or over your shoulder never to be found again, I can't see the problem.

I know which I would prefer.

The problem is they fall into the action, the EJECTOR does not throw the case anywhere/

And as long as i know what the ejector and extractor are thats all that matters,

Bob.

I see your problem now. Fingers crossed that one of the springs you have been offered solves it.

Don't be tempted to cut off a full coil again, if necessary you can slowly grind them down on a grinder, or even a Dremel, and also get a nice smooth surface as a result.

cheers Sharpie,

sadly I have done that to my cost £50 down the drain ?

I wonder with all this talk about extractor and ejector, if perhaps you may have had the wrong spring supplied.
Also, on the 595 you have an extractor claw which acts on a pivot pin and is pushed by a coil spring, from memory the extractor claw is very similar, but slightly thinner, than the Sako equivalent ( they can be mixed up) .
This may be your issue.

I have removed them one by one and matched them. and the EJECTOR spring is larger than the extractor one,

SADLY still no flipping joy.

the only thing I can think of now is that the EXTRACTOR is sitting a tad high maybe that's the issue. I will be in the gun/radio room tonight with a flipin big hammer, so annoying I was hoping to bring the br to work tomorrow for a bit of 5.6/700 yard plinking

think its set to tight,

I fitted new ejector and extractor and on closing the bolt with brand new brass the bolt was hard to close and the ejector (sako type) made a grove in the head of the case, never seen this before so it looks like the gun will have to go to a smith for a check up

Perhaps you should have followed your own instinct bobjs..

Hi John

What is strange is the rifle had been and was ejecting ok, then I placed it for sale and wanted to check everything over before it went to the new owner, as they say bullet on bullet but the ejection action of the case was not too good, so I asked Neil MC to order me a new set from GMK, and you have read the results, I have spoken to Neil who built the rifle for its first owner, who only shot just under 80 rounds and I got it from him,

very strange to say the least, I think I will drop it off with Neil to have it checked over (bugger I just had the barrel chopped and bead blasted re-threaded and crowned) and then the £50 for kit from GMK and miffing off the new owner who I have to say was a real gent.
