Sorry if this has already been linked, but I have been away computer-free for a day or two:

For my money, of all the membership orgs the NGO are miles ahead on this issue. Very smart, and well worth my 'associate' (i.e. not a gamekeeper but a supporter) membership fee.

This submission to DEFRA is a good piece of work.
Which is exactly the evidenced based response you need when dealing with this from Wild Justice

Worrying to see mammals and the lack of a coherent policy framework.

I went to a talk lastnight, ran by the gwct.

They said that one of the best things we ( the public) have done is send email to our MP's. They said that it puts pressure on the MP's, who put the pressure on to natural England, whos job is was to sort this. And the MPs have got enough work on the hands at the moment.
If you havnt done so, then continue to send emails to the MPs

They also said that the handful of organisations can only do so much, and the general public should also be trying to do everthing they can

Interesting the they say we can't tell the difference between a rook and a crow, coming from people that don't know their arse from their elbow

We have no evidence of crow magpie rook etc for the decline in songbirds etc
Well someone needs to send them o video of these birds raiding nests and killing chicks
Etc these people are mental and should be put in a home

The NGO response is worthy even mentions BASC's 'woody' submission in glowing terms.
Worth a punt for this year.

Hopefully their real purpose and aims will be evident to the committee with the negative emphasis they place on game bird rearing and the veiled threats of further action against ‘sport shooting’. If that doesn’t act as a wake up call for DEFRA to get their house in order and the organisations to go on the offensive nothing will.

There are at least two individuals on the EFRA committee whose views and associations are distinctly anti hunting/shooting/fishing. It's not composed of MPs entirely without bias.

Wild Justice want to eradicate Game shooting and this GL challenge was a foot in the door. This is on the back of Avery's failure to have Grouse Shooting banned earlier this year but the Government advised that the worth to the rural economy and conservation benefits were greater.
Packham is closely linked with this as it fits with his and the RSPB claims about keepers and Hen harrier/ Raptors / Eagles illegal persecution etc.

I think that this is correct, and everybody should be doing everthing they can, no matter how little it seams

I Just got around to reviewing this:

What a bunch of self-serving waffle. Scientific research such as that from the SBS above? Pah! Let's not let inconvenient facts get in the way of our prejudices.

And on and on they go, piling lie upon falsehood upon utterly transparent bias. Dreadful stuff.

What for me best illustrates the extraordinary arrogance of this 3-person activist cabal is their demand for a 'seat at the table' in discussions between DEFRA and NE.

Thoroughly nasty little people.

And you get an insight as to where they are looking to get involved next:
  • Mammals: Although the implementation of laws relating to killing of wild birds has been grossly inadequate the law has been clear and has a logical framework. In contrast the legal protection given to wild mammals in the UK is a hotchpotch with little clear rationale behind it. Defra might wish to look at these matters in the Environment Bill or elsewhere.
  • Poor regulatory framework for killing of wildlife: sport shooting is largely unregulated in the UK in contrast with many European countries where hunters and shooters need to be licensed, or the landholdings on which they shoot need to be licensed. No quotas are set for quarry species and there is no reporting of species-specific annual bags. The game shooting industry is the major source of wildlife crime against protected birds of prey. Government must do more to provide a strong regulatory framework, meaningful enforcement and publicity for good and bad practice.
