Remote Gravity Drinker....

Every shoot owner/keeper I know all talk about how important water is for the birds, yes the rain has turned up but many of us don't have IBC's to keep the drinkers full.
2 seasons of my float level drinkers have worked well in the pen with the birds taking to them well also easy to clean.

Cutting 5 gallon cans in half making 2 drinkers leaves you topping them up a lot, cutting a 1/3 of a can does add more volume but with 20kg + of food in a feeder the water needs to match the food.

Trying to fit a can in a cut down tray would not work so a quick measure 600x400x100 came up close as a cat litter tray in Blue lol

4 holes under the handle grip on top of the 5 gallon can also a bungee cord....

Not re-inventing the wheel but works a treat so far.

Half barrels at every feeder water changed regularly !
I can see the reason behind what you and many other do but I my opinion it creates somewhere for a bird to stand on and mess in the water adding to the of disease !
But this is just my opinion

Well it cant help to try stuff as one time they would have been galvanized water trough's before cans were cut in half....

A wonderfully sympathetic addition to the landscape! But what the hell critters don't see colour in the way our eyes render the spectrum of colour.

What drinker/feeder set up do you use....?

I can only guess from day one in my pen the blue feeders had feed in and water right next to them...

they have started on cracked wheat in grey pan feeders so colour only comes into it with a brown spaniel up their arse....

I don't question your aptitude in such matters or allied work ethic. I simply hate to see such deeply unattractive bits of kit within the landscape and that are made all the more retina-searingly painful due to colour.

Sorry if that wasn't clear.

K

So they work Yes so its a plus and they are kiss way of feeding/drinking on the cheap and it wont break the bank if its trashed or nicked ? So thats another tick mind you if your posts were all but sales then no one would comment

I take it all the bright red, blue, yellow tractors, bailers combines etc have all been switched for the green of J D...

Also you never answered my question on what colour you use with your feeders/drinkers....

As I don't own a shotgun and have no desire to do so that hopefully answers your question?

K

So what I looks like your saying is because it doesn't provide you with any sport because you don't shoot a shotgun you don't want to see it about ! I dare say if you were involved in shooting game with shotgun your view would be different !!

Am I not permitted to have a view that green or brown feeders would have less visual impact in the countryside? How many blue highseats have you come across during your stalking career?

Wheather or not I have an interest in hunting with a shotgun is irrelevant. But full marks for the spin you've put on my reply! You should consider running for Parliament.

My high seats ( all home made btw ) some have silver ally builders ladders, one has a blue seat, the tips of my quadsticks have red insulation tape on.....stalk in blue jeans and a tee shirt in the summer...

Strange that we set out plastic pigeons, a machine with a large 12v battery whizzing it around around and still manage to kill a 100 plus pigeons.....

If i was a member of Parliament then a ban of importing of Stutzens would be high on my list...:rofl:

Sorry to ask a stupid question but where does the water come out??
Looks like 5 gallon drum the right way up?

That brings back memories of the olden days before auto drinkers!
If it wasn't bad enough on rearing field had to cart water in 5 gallon drums to all the pens. U used to turn the drums upside down inside the square 1s halted.

Dunno if I've tried using normal auto drinkers, the dome 1s work well, using a 5 gall drum as the resvior, a car tyre valve ( with the valve bit taken out) works as a great cheap 'tank connector' for 10mm micro pipe. I've even used them on 50 gallon drums in pens and work great.
The dust cap keeps them water tight for transport.
Saves you the issues with disease and birds crapping in the water.

In an ideal world we wouldn't need hoppers as either plentiful wild birds or hand feeding, but it is a big enough mission if ur part time keeping them full never mind painting them all.
But they can be an eyesore at times but plenty other things are a far bigger eyesore incountryside like silage bale wrap esp now with all stupid colours

4 holes under the handle grip on top of the 5 gallon can...

I tested it with it leveling out at 2 inches in a 4 inch tray, my other drinkers have a small float valve set in a drum with one side cut out. The feed drum ( 5 gallon can ) sits on the BLUE feeder adding height to the system with a pipe set in the lid. A small 4 mm hole lets air in so it can't air lock.

Easy for people to sit back and pick holes in what and how other people go about a country sport which as run for generations, much the same with a food critic who could not boil an egg...

If you want to see mess in the country side the the first port of call would be for me, horse stables with hundreds of of white posts connecting white fencing wire to stretch to the moon...pallets tied together being propped up with a pole to block a gap in the hedge also gates with string hinges....!

I thought in ur photo it looked like the handle was at the top.
I thought holes were for attaching the bungy.

Can u not just turn those drums upside down without the holes in the handle?
That's how I learned 30 odd years ago, but mibbee a different drum design to wot unused too.

With the piped 1s I usually put valve in near bottom and just take the cap off to let air in, means ur only drilling 1 hole which the dust cap seals off watertight.
