Facebook bullshiite foxing.

Hi Hendrix it's the fact the thermal, drones can identify a fox at those ranges that gets me I've a decent range finder but to range something at those distances at night I find dam near impossible. I'd say something on the groups on faceache but I'd just get abuse an blocked and I quite like reading the bull****.
 I know what you mean. I know for example, if something appears on 1 farm in particular I know within 20 yards or so how far it is. The only reason i use faceache anymore is to troll vegans :D lol

I am on one group and can say most of the shots at night are close range 80 yrs - 140 yrs. there is a odd 220 yrd kill but no reports of very long distance.

I was going to weigh in here but I'm just gonna grab a bag of Popcorn and sit back and watch where this goes and for how long....
Ok so the popcorns run out so I'm weighing in....the animals that we hunt be it a lowly rat up to a majestic 12 point stag are living breathing creatures that deserve to be dispatched in a quick and humane way and treated with respect...They are not targets to be engaged with out due regard for their welfare at extreme and stupid distances that make a clean humane shot very difficult to guarantee...at night a shot at a fox at 400 yards does not in my opinion meet the aforementioned considerations and again in my opinion is more about ego and 'willy waving' than good ethical hunting...Hugh.

how true the good ethical hunting bit but even on here I've seen folk saying that they would happily take a shot at a fox that they wouldn't take at a deer, most deer are a bit bigger than your average Charlie. If you wouldn't shoot at a deer in certain conditions or distances why does Mr fox deserve anything less.

Correct !

I believe that deer are treated better than foxes where distance of shot is concerned is because the deer has value as a carcass where the fox will be chucked in a hedge like so much litter..the deer has a higher status as a trophy too where the fox does not and the deer is higher up the chain of achievement in terms of passing dsc 1 etc ....Hugh

Edit... Foxes are also classed as vermin where deer are not....

That would depend on who you ask. There’s some think deer are vermin. Personally I think the fox is a very worthy quarry. No less than a deer in some senses more so.
I think the bragging should be nearest shot not furthest, a far greater test of skill.

The Facebook groups are typical of social media on a whole, full of absolute tosh and dreamers. You've got the "faces" who run these pages surrounded by every brown nosing boot licker on the planet and not one of them is worthy of the title foxer..!!

They rock up in all the gear, climb the five bar gate, set the rifle up on a tripod, switch on the caller, spot with the thermal, shoot with the NV, and back home in time for Love Island, foxing my arse..!!!

Having said that though moving on to your other point, technology as come on leaps and bounds and I do believe the 400 yard shots are achievable given the right conditions and that's the point, absolutely every possible aspect as to be perfect. I've been foxing a long time and I can count on both my hands the amount of times I've had those condition, so it just goes to show these people are just playing at it, and you'll only ever see what they want you too..!!

I only blast my foxes at 2 and 50 yards with a shotgun during daylight. Have i gotta learn how to use a lamp to be a pro or just really use the sun? Am I a foxer or just an imposter?

I am also a member of lots of the groups . If i am right the post you are meaning he actually underestimated the range, using a lamp he thought it was just around 350 yards or so but was infact 415 yards .

how much drop does even the fastest bullet have at over 400 yards? and to undetestimate and still hit at that range, im sure it can be done but im not sure how

In which case, about 8 yards with a Webley and Scott bolt action 410 !

I was out rabbiting, saw a small dog fox sunning itself. Crawled into range over about 45 minutes.

Probably the most intense bit of hunting I've ever done.

Hmm 4ft and 2ft..

Reminds me of years ago, used to get a small pack of beagles come down for the day and work a few valleys, was an enjoyable day, and surprising how many foxes we accounted for, i think 13 one year, there was an old chap that wore a red beret called Henry, what a character he was, used to always have a pocket full of foxy's glacier mints on him! he always knew where to stand and accounted for several crafty old foxes, good memories

Hi John yep that could be the one, but it's not the first I've seen in that group. At those kind of distances it's not just a case of aiming a wee bitty high.

I shoot a lot of longer range stuff during the day and always need to range and dial.

I know with the calibre bullet and velocity he gets he would only need to aim 3" high at 350 to make a nice chest shot depending on wind .

Well I know one who does it and shot placement pap on ....
But then he was F-class Uk & European champion so knows how to put a bullet where he wants it .
Properly ranged , known distance and knowing your kit.

Agreed for most it’s a no no ....but handful who are quite capable

Paul
