Hi folks, been stalking a while but new to the world of homeloading. Have spent some isolation time setting up the Lee press that’s been sat in the cupboard for 3yrs!

I was given some RL19 by a friend. I am loading 95g SST bullets as I find both the 95g Hornady Superformance and 95g Remington Accutip run well through my rifle.

I have emailed Hornady and 5hey sent over load data for RL19 and the bullet of choice.
I have measured the COAL and the first few loads I have put together have been a mixed bag?

started out with 40g (1/2 way in the suggested range from Hornady), also tried 41.5g

shot 5 shot groups with both each group had 2x touching and 3x flyers 🤔

Anyonehad any luck loading 95g SSTs over RL 19?

Cheers all 😉

Lol...sorry touoverall length

That is part of what I am hoping someone can assist me with..I am not sure what depth to seat at or how much powder to run with
Hornady suggested 39.5-44g which equates to 2700-3000fps col 2.630

I tried a batch of these at 40g and one at 41.5g to start out.

That seems very short. SAAMI is 2.710", and I would start there. Based on that, this is what data Quickload gives. On paper it's safely below Pmax, but start lower, and work up.

RL19 would not be on my list of powder choices. I would be looking at something a little faster, to get a fuller burn rate.

RL26 looks like a really good choice.

Wow!...wasn’t expecting that!

thank you for such a comprehensive answer. The RL19 was given to me by a friend that has given up retired

how would you usually go about selecting powders without the software?

Searching the internet for as much data as I can, and there are many people on here who will try to help.

Each cartridge will historically have "go to powders", but there are many new powders, and it takes time for load data to start appearing.

As you have the RL19, try working up to the Quickload target, and see if it helps, Ideally, chronograph and compare the estimated speed, to actual. If it's a bit slower, increase the powder, if it's faster, drop it back.

This assumes that you need to tighten the group.

Like everyone, I like to see the magic moa adhered too, not because the deer or foxes appreciate it anymore but it gives me piece of mind when resting the sights on the quarry

I have experimented with factory loads...never bothered with anything less than 90g though as I shoot more deer than foxes

rifle seems to like 95g Hornady, Fiocchi, Remington (all sst type bullets) also get agood group with 105g Geko (great on fallow but not on roe)

I will make some stouter loads up at 2.700 and see how we go...

thank you very much

Without wishing to seem rude or mean, please stop.
reloader 19 is a poor powder for .243, you won’t get good burn rates, and guessing where to start and just having a go is a real recipe for disaster.
everyone’s new once and there are loads of people who have a ton of knowledge and would be happy to help you out.
What are you hoping to achieve ?
what bullets are you loading?
If you google “spud reloading” and give him a call he has a wealth of knowledge, can sell you what you’ll need to make a good working load for your .243, and that way you’ve given yourself the best chance for success.
Good luck, I’m sure you’ll find it really rewarding.

The last thing the OP needs as a novice re-loader is a less than ideal powder. Abandon the R19 and go to Viht. N160 which is readily available and works just fine. :thumb:

Righto...

Firstly, @Lateral, RL26 is way slower than RL19, so the advice about a faster powder and then posting RL26 as a good option doesn’t stack up mate. But it is a good option nonetheless, for the experienced reloader, as it requires some seriously compressed loads to work well.

Secondly, @Acm, RL19 is very close to H4350 (AR2209) which is the gold standard for .243 Win, and splits N150/550 and N160/560.

There’s nothing wrong with RL19 and once the reloader has found the node, it will work.

Hornady sent him data FFS. They would never do this if he had an inappropriate powder.

Do your homework fellas.
