COVID-19 “You shall not eat any abomination"

The way I look at the teachngs in the Bible, Koran, the Bhudda etc is that they fundamentally are a code living a good, safe and fulfilling life. All the practices teachings re what to eat and what not to eat were the results of many thousands of years of trial and error and observation. And most make perfect sense with a modern day scientific view point.

I often think there is a huge amount of sense of going back to original texts and teachings - they are often very succinct and to the point. Modern man has the ability to take a very simple concept, and make it extremely complex and impenetrable so that you become an expert.

With the exception of rabbits and pigs, on the whole you have to agree with Leviticus. Who would eat something that eats carrion or meat, have you tried badger or otter ? One stinks and the fat of the other turns green with cooking and you will never forget the smell of either !

As are most films, novels, stalking reminiscences, etc. That doesn't make them bollocks. Just stories. And there's nothing wrong with using stories to convey a message or to give guidance.

Not all people are capable of assimilating fiction, decoding it and learning anything from it unfortunately. A pity. It means much of the vast store of human experience and wisdom is beyond their reach.

At best the bible is a collection of stores written by many different people, not less than 2000 years ago, and each has been edited so many time they probably don't even convey the same 'message' anymore. After all, who is going to stick up for a book and belief that says Darwin was a heretic ?

Neil.

Because the bible is fiction

Neil.
Is it?
Before the floods of Noah the Bible talks of one land after it talks of lands.
Scientists have proven the world was one land mass at one point.
Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt after a series of plagues.
Again scientists have a theory about these being very plausible.
Arabs and Israelis don’t eat pork.
There is proof that pork has always been contaminated in the Middle East by trichinosis, so avoiding eating pig meat was essential for survival.
Christians believe Jesus is the Son of God, Muslins believe he was at least one of the prophets.
The Bible also started the first laws, i.e. do not kill; do not steal etc.

There are other pointers throughout the Bible, that would indicate it is not fiction.

Granted that somethings are either out of date, or so badly explained that they are unbelievable. That is one of the problems the Bible and Christianity face, they both need to evolve and be fairly modern, rather than just stick in the past

But I’ll say this whilst in hospital I said my prayers regularly and overheard a couple of nurses talking.
One asked “do you think prayer helps?” To which the second replied “I don’t know but I do know that those with a belief recover better than those without”

What about chickens? They'll eat just about the same things as pigs whether it's dead, alive, fresh or rotten 🤢

"Now officials seem to believe that the current virus originates from the wet markets in China"

"Officials" can believe what they like, I strongly believe when the final analysis is done we will learn the virus did not come from the wet markets but it did come from Wuhan.

doubt we will ever know the true origin

Sense this one speaks.

I remember something in the Old Testament which mentioned otters which classed them as fish, because they swam, so you could eat them on a Friday. Or something like that. And isn’t there a bit about the things which ‘slithereth upon the ground’ ?

This came up last weekend when I told my devout RC brother in Australia about my venison tamales cooking away (recipe off meat eater on Netflix). He was shocked I was eating meat on good Friday.

As for eating old Brock, I know a farmer here in Derbyshire who lived in Devon in the 70s or early 80s and he says there used to be badger hams on the bar in country pubs back then. And apparently it wasn’t bad. I didn’t think it was a wind up for a southerner new to the Peak District but now I think about it.............
