Head Prep

I have a Muntjac and Roe head I'm looking to get cleaned up.

For the Munty, I figure I'll need the whole of the top part of the skull in order to keep the tusks. The Roe I was thinking of having cut.

Has anyone got any recommendations in the Midlands and also any idea of cost? I've never had a skull prepped before.

Cheers.

PS - I am aware of how to do it myself, and would give it a try where it not that I would be overlooked by neighbours!

Just do it. Boil outside as soon as possible after shooting and with smelly washing powder and it doesn't smell too bad.

Keiths high seat based in Walsall prices on his web site.

Cheers all, I’ll have a look at Keith’s and also drop Matt a message.

I really don’t think I can get caught boiling heads in the garden... I’m afraid!

Skin the head, boil it up with some soap for a couple of hours, clean the meat off the skull using a blunt knife, use a power water jet to blast the rest away. Cut the skull using a wood saw after drawing your cut lines on the skull -or use a roe skull jig, reboil for a shorter time if necessary to clean any stubborn tissue away. Once clean place into a container with diluted bleach to remove any staining - rinse, dry and repeat until you get the desired effect. Put car filler into the brain cavity and screw onto a wood mount from behind.

Now that's an idea! I usually epoxy a wooden block into the cavity, but the filler is worth a thought. Does it take a self-tapping screw ok?

Yes. I use 2 screws on each roe and 3 on fallow/sika/red - any ones I have lying around the right length and it works perfectly. If you muck it up just fill the holes with the filler and re insert the screw. Very quick and easy. I use Big Boy easy sanding filler from EBay.

Hi all

I boil mine outside for 4, 5 hours, clean off the loose skin, meet etc and re boil. Once all clean I then add peroxide.

Whats the best why to store them, as I find they loose the colour and the skull does become brittle to.

Thanks

Simon

4-5 hours?!?!? That will be where your problems lie! 1hour should suffice, cooking that long you will be destroying the bone structure and the water it’s in will e leaching grubby colour into the bone.
skin first (removes a lot of dirt from the equation, scoop out brains and remove eyes too, the brain is very greasy so will get into the bone too.

Ooh ok, so there's not much I can with my existing ones.

Just found if I didn't boil for a long time there was still a lot of flash/brains etc still attached.

, Just made it!!!, Front gate clattering just as I was rinsing Roe buck's head,The boiling pan I used gleaming, waiting to go in with all the other dishwasher contents.

Bl**dy Hell where's it gone???? Arthur the rescue Greyhound was nursing it in his bed ... Just about to crush it:banghead::banghead:
