No more Fags at Oxford

Apparently Oxford Council are going to ban smoking outdoors, throughout the city, and are authorising Council Wardens to give out tickets for anyone caught.
Although I am not a smoker, I do think that we are now seeing a reduction in our freedoms, I would imagine that smokers get some relief from smoking, and although dangerous to health no doubt is beneficial in stress relief etc, and I suppose it will have an ongoing effect on pub attendance , especially to those pubs that don't serve food, I mean you may as well stay at home with the beer from the supermarket and smoke at will.

The issue is those of us who sit outside on a nice day and get subjected to the stink of cigarettes. Ok in the winter when we are inside. As an exsmoker I sympathise with the smokers but as an exsmoker I am probably the most opinionated and can’t stand it. Nothing as bad as a reformed smoker they say. 😁
I`m with you on that.

I don't smoke , but this bothers me . It seems that the world gets less tolerant everyday . Singapore banned chewing gum , to some that sounds reasonable I suppose . I guess I'm just a bit sensitive to nanny state politics of any kind .

I don’t care. But by extension, if a city council can do that, then what’s to stop Oxford County Council banning firearms use in Oxfordshire?

I recall reading a while ago that some councils or housing associations prohibit (or try to prohibit) ownership/storage of firearms in residential properties under their control. Can anyone throw any light on this?

The problem is, that boils down to because you don’t like it, nobody is allowed to do it...whether you’re there or not.

So basically exactly the same thought process as the antis.

Whenever I catch myself thinking like that, I have a word with myself. Unless it’s about antisocial pricks in caravans on village greens, loud trail bikes, or wokery. Then I let myself carry on.

I hate smoking, I have never smoked but I did live with smokers for a large part of my life hence my intolerance, but I really do think that Oxford are going too far. As for chewing gum I think Singapore made the right decision. If you need convincing just look at the pavements on our high streets. Nothing against the gum itself just the inconsiderate gum users who think it acceptable to simply spit it out rather than disposing of it properly (similar issues with smokers).

I gave up smoking 26 years ago, and so dislike the smell now that I actively avoid places that permit smoking. Nevertheless, I think the sustained persecution of smokers through brutal public health messages, tax increases, and physical exclusions is a dangerous blueprint for the erosion of civil liberties. I think there are enough examples from history of the perils of pursuing a perfect world through the eradication of difference as it is, but today's world seems to have decided that open-mindedness requires blinkers, rightly pursuing the removal of historic prejudices, exclusions and repressions yet wrongly building new ones to take their place.

Just an observation make of it what you will.
The main depot for the whole of our Borough County Council is on the edge of our village. There are two entrances to the depot one to the offices and the other used by large vehicles such as the bin lorries. As smoking is not allowed on council premises staff gather outside both gates to smoke. The area around the gate used by the blue collar staff (bin men, grounds staff, road maintenance staff) is always clean and tidy and its unusual to see a cigarette butt on the ground. The paths around the entrance used by the office staff is always heavily littered for 10 -15 feet in both directions with discarded cigarette butts.

The blue-collar staff should be disciplined. Are they really so lazy that they can't walk around to the other side of the building to pick up their colleagues' litter?

Five minutes of looking into this and it appears that any ban is targeted at outdoor eating areas only. These are licenced and therefore as part of the licencing process they can be forced to be smoke free. They will also encourage (not force) people outside office buildings to give up smoking. I am a complete anti-smoker but I don't see how they can fine someone for a completely legal act of smoking on the street. I would like to see every smoker (and anyone else) that throws their rubbish on the ground heavily fined and there are existing laws to cover that.

i packed smoking in two years ago after 55 years, and got a smoking m.o.t at the hospital, no heart problems or lungs at all, but my mate bought me a vape thing and i tried it for a week, i dont know why but i didnt have any cravings or withdrawl symptoms at all, except that they rushed me in hospital when my heart started speeding up to 165 bpm, they did some tests and the doctor asked me if i smoked, and i told him about me quiting the cigs, and using the vape, bingo the doctor was clued up on them, it seemed that i got accute nichotine poisoning from using the vape, after giving me some tablets i was back to normal, so my advise is, if you quit the smokes, dont get a vape, im not on a mission about smokers, if you want to smoke carry on, but if your thinking about quiting and getting a vape, watch what your doing bs

Seems a few of us on here happy to describe ourselves as "anti" things we dont like. Perhaps consider being "non". I don't like smelling of smoke, or being forced to inhale it, after quitting smoking over a decade ago. But if you want to smoke, where its not going to have an impact on other peoples health, crack on and enjoy it.
