Leicia amplus or meopta R2. Both roughly same price at just over £1000. Or anything else in that price range. Looking at 2.5-15x56i.
Cant decide why the amplus is cheaper than the rest of the leica range. Its entry level.
Meopta is its flagship model. Its top of the tree.

I have no experience of the Leica but own a meopta R1RD 3-12x56 and its as good as anything else i've looked through at last light. I bought it second hand and the warranty was transferred to me. I broke the Illuminated turret and explained that essentially it was my fault as i overtightened the cap for the battery and broke the IR adjustment. They swapped it for a new one no charge.

I had a 1-6x24 R2. They're excellent scopes at a more reasonable price.

I think Meopta don't get the respect they deserve, in part because of the lack of visibility, and in part because the do an entry level line of Meopta branded stuff manufacturered in America (I think), which isn't on anything like the same level and is the extent of most peoples exposure to the brand.

Personally I think the top level Meopta glass is easily on par, if not slightly better than an entry level Leica, as is every other aspect. They actualy contract manufacture both glass and complete scopes in the Conquest line for Zeiss, which gives an idea of where they stand on quality, fit and finish.

I'd buy another and I think at the roughly 1000 quid price point, they probaby offer the best value and quality you can get in the market (although admittedly, a top of the line Leica Magnus at £2200 is possibly a bit better optically I'd concede).

The Amplus is less in price as you cannot retrofit a BDC (you can buy it already fitted). No ballistic rings available, where BDC is fitted standard ring only. There isn’t an auto IR turn off. The unit does have a parallax down to 20m. Leica would call it a no bells and whistles scope. All parts are metal internally and the glass type is still premium glass. Transmission is 90% along with other premium models. Only available as ring mount.

In this price range look at the new Minox Allrounder 3-15x56. Best low-light performance and probably the sharpest as well. The downsides are: 5 time zoom ratio compared with 6 time zoom ratio of Leica and Meopta. Personally would however trade the zoom ratio for better optical performance anytime.

If only Leica and Meopta are the options, I would go with Meopta in this comparison. Or would spend a bit more on Meopta Fortis 6 which is much better than all these mentioned.

Do you mean the Leica Fortis 6, instead of Meopta Fortis 6?

Leica makes probably the best optical lenses in the world. If I was choosing between the two it would be Leica all day long. Meopta is not even in the same class as Leica.

Definitely give the minox a look... ive used scopes from all the top makes and swaying to minox more now due to the great value and optical quality..
I admit the minox aren't quite at that last minute of light gathering as the swarovski... but the general quality of sight picture and the better useabilty under the lamp (too much flare from swaro and leica I found) makes minox a better choice for me....

To contradict myself though..... the leica eri range of scopes are bloody good.... a superb reticule illumination that doesn't "flare" and a good eyebox for fast target acquisition (minox has these too btw) ....

When comparing like for like, think you will find that they actually might be.

Marketing costs and badge snobbery I believe are the things that define them…
