Ok, Ive been talking about this on another thread and Ive decided to give away this knife that my father gave to me nearly 60 years ago, its sat in a pipe cabinet for probably 50 years now and I only fished it out to join in a conversation about these knives.

So, if anyone has a young son, or I guess I should add daughter, and who would like them to have a small 3" blade knife on their belt when they go out with dad hiking, shooting or fishing, they can have this knife for free, please be honest about it though, it means a lot to me as I don't have many things from my old man and I'd like to to go to some youngster that will enjoy it.
Cheers
Al

I've an eight year old boy that would love it. But truth is that's "dad's knife". Not mine not my boy's and never will be. Please keep it. When you touch it and handle it you touch and handle something that you father once held. And when you pass have it buried with you. To go back to the earth from which the ore came to strike it and on which the cattle grazed that made the leather that encases it.

That is a terrific gesture.

However.

I am with ES on this. Is there no young person within your family to whom you could pass this along to?

@enfieldspares I have the exact same knife up for sale in the classifieds, that holds no sentimental value to me at all, I just bought it because I liked it!
If your young lad would like it send me your address and he is welcome to it FOC. I had no idea they were the boyscouts knife of choice so it seems fitting a young lad should have it and use it.
@Ozalid that's a terrific gesture to think of parting with a knife that has so many memories attached.
All the best.

Keep it as a tangible reminder of your father. I've got my Grandfathers pipe and tobacco pouch. I'm never going to smoke it but the
faint smell that still lingers takes me back to when I was a child.
It's a nice gesture, but just treasure the knife.

Your dad wanted to buy you something so this gift to you is from him with all the hopes and wishes for the future that any father has when he buys his son a tool. I would understand if it was something less personal that you might not be so attached to but its a tool, a knife. He has given that purchase thought and consideration and gave to you hoping that it would serve you well and that you would remember him when you picked it up.

Cherish it.

D

PS Its a nice knife too. If it had been any other knife I would have bought it, cleaned it up and used it !

Thanks for all the comments, I know you mean well and yes, of course it means a lot to me, but it will give me more pleasure knowing some young kid has got probably their first knife and that maybe they will hand it on, than it sitting back in that bloody pipe cabinet drawer with his pipes and bits and bobs in, that I also ought to get rid of.
So now I've decided it's going, it's going. My wife will only chuck it out with all my other junk when I croak anyway, so just say yes, PM me your details and I'll post it out.

Was given these by dad and grandad, rite of passage big boy knives. Been years since they were used, good memories of far off times every time I see them.
Whatever you decide to do with your knife, I hope it ends up being as precious as these two are to me. Kind regards Jess.IMG_20210720_153943.jpg

Good for you 👍

I'm not sure young boys can be trusted with this sort of knife in this day and age, their mind set is different from when we were young.
Surely young boys are the same as they have ever been, ie some may be trusted with such an item and others definitely shouldn’t be?

I'm afraid there is more knife crime today than when we were young and mostly carried out by youngsters unfortunately.
A death recently where a young girl was stabbed by two youths in a public park for no apparent reason.

Oh what joy! My first real knife was exactly like this, from memory I was aged about 10; with it I fenced with d’Artagnan and the three Musketeers (not many knew there were actually four of us though the TV screen was so small then four would have been a crush); fought with John Wayne aka Davy Crockett at the Alamo (just before he lost his eye wot? though in my case those pesky mexicanos had no chance pilgrim, and swam with Lloyd Bridges but he could hold his breath much longer than I (and besides our tin bath wasn’t big enough for the two of us and all those submarines, doing all sorts of nasty stuff to the strangely black and white, yellow enemy. Why I even managed to get shot by my pal in a daring attempt to see if an air rifle pellet would be cut in two when it hit the blade. It was about then that I found out that it is best to point the blade slightly away from, rather than towards, the rifleman. What fun - golden days indeed!
Thank you Oz for reviving those long forgotten memories; for what it is worth IMHO you should keep it as a cherished momento of times long gone and your far-seeing father. Bless.
