Best 4x4 pickup for 10 grand

I know, its been done a million times but it's always good to hear fresh views.

Need a 4x4 pickup. Budget 10K and it'll probably have to last a few years. Not bothered about driving refinement, just want durability and reliability and reasonable running costs - so no V8s or 3.0L autos.
And bearing in mind I'm now living on the edge of the Pennines and the roads will likely be plastered in salt all winter, known rust buckets need not apply.

Great Wall Steed and Nissan Navaras already ruled out.

Wavering between Hilux and L200 at the moment. 2.2 Ford Ranger a possibility but engine seems a bit under-powered.

Opinions welcome.

I was in the same boat a few weeks ago. I concluded that for that price you're looking at Rusty 12 year old pickups that aren't the cheapest to maintain unfortunately.

Isuzu is probably also worth a look as they are good but slightly cheaper than Hilux. Crazy prices for everything at the moment! Whatever you get it would be well worth getting it treated and undersealed. All the best in your search.

Since I didn't need the space/load capacity and wanted better off-road ability and manoeuvrability on forestry tracks I went for a low mileage and rust free Jimny.

When I have been considering second hand pick ups, I couldn't get past the advantage of the centre diff transmission of the up market models of L200s. Apart from the on road winter driving good manners...it does mean that no previous owner has been winding up the transmission by using it on the road in four wheel drive whether inadvertently or otherwise.

Get a decent Hilux 2nd hand. Well achievable for under £10k, though 2nd hand prices are climbing (across all the makes and types of 2nd hand vehicles).

One thing to bear in mind that any pickup on the cusp of or over the 5 year/100k mile point WILL require a 'new something' at some imminent point - be it timing belt, prop shaft bearings, brake calipers etc. This is almost unavoidable unless you find some immaculate shop run pick up.

Hilux is what I'd say.

I picked up a 2015 model for £10k a few months back and its been great.
Good price I'd say.
I am leaning towards the Hilux. There must be a reason why they still fetch good money with 250,000 miles on them.
Then again, there are a few '13/'14 plate Ford Rangers about with supercabs. I'm really drawn to those as they're more useful to me. I'd far rather have a supercab than a two door with no room for tools or guns, or a four door with rear seats I'll never use and reduced load space. Supercab Hiluxes are like hens teeth.

If it's what you want and you aren't under a time pressure, they do come up, you just need to know what you want and have some searches saved.

Have a search around for ex-Forestry Commission vehicles. Some come exceedingly well equipped - roof light, gunsafe, dog cage, winch, etc, and priced within your budget.

Upping the budget to 15K makes the world of difference. 100K mileages come down to 50K. But it's making me wince.
Another thought. I could manage with a good 4x4 car as long as it's capable for towing.

Would I be mental to look at a ten year old Freelander 2 TD4 GS...?

I am, hopefully, going to be in the market next year for a newer motor. I am thinking a 4x4 car and a small trailer for carrying the deer.
might change my mind when I do have money but I Like to go for more comfort and to be fair, I don’t do extreme offroading. Most of my areas are just off the road so slightly raised ground clearance for the rare occasion.

Ive been through the same process in the past few weeks.
Sold my defender to a lovely chap on here, and been looking for a hilux albeit at a lower price than you as I wanted a 03/04/05 mk5. Prob best avoiding 06-10 and from 11 on probably a bit more powerful.

good luck..... what was going for 4k last year is now 7.5 plus. Or rusted to hell underneath.

The other superannoying thing on ebay, gumtree and farcebook is they are populated by timewasters, people not really wanting to sell but find out what theyre offered, dealers masquerading as private sellers and the typical sick, lame and lazy who dont want to get out of bed on a weekend to sell you what they advertised !
Ive just put a deposit down on a cheap mazda 2500 (read less refined ford ranger) for under 3k, seems solid underneath.

There are still good deals but you may need another vehicle while you have a long search !!

Why rule out the Navara ? I’ve had all the well known brands including 2 Navara’s and never had any issues with them which in all honesty can’t be said about some off the others

I'm a Navara ZD30 fan as well and run muddies winch lightbar and snorkel.I've used and abused it off road for 15 yrs now both private and commercial hunting basically I've done everything off road but roll it.If serviced every 10000 kms I would expect at it's current mileage of 360000 it should get to 500000 before the motor gets tired. My last got to 825000 before I traded up.Like the local towie said to me once, " boy if it's name doesn't start with an N or a T with 4wd's don't touch it"..

Go for the 2.4 Isuzu. Best pickup I had wish I never got rid of it.Don’t get me started on the new type Navara, some people swear by them, mine was nothing but trouble once it got over 60,000.

Totally agree steer well clear of the 2.5 litre Navara..just an observation over here they don't last the big kms

Just changed my 3ltr 12 plate Isuzu, after achieving 134,000 miles without any real issues with it. This was the 3rd one for me. I was reluctant to go to the newer model 1.9 D max as it has a much smaller engine. However I also wanted an Auto box this time due to the amount of driving I do through out the year.
I managed to find a good 17 plate with 30,000 miles and still under the 5 year Isuzu warranty. Again I am impressed with the Isuzu build and quality. Plus it still pulls well with the smaller engine and fuel economy is reasonable too.

I looked at Toyota, but found little on the market at the time of good condition, even finding a low mileage Isuzu is not easy, and the prices are always with VAT as a rule.
Just undersealed my truck with this Lanoguard which seems to have good reports. You can do it yourself easily, and it comes in a spray container that you prime by pumping it.

My 19 plate D Max came with 15k was a company owners wagon, never had any thing in the buck, but that has changed know.

There's several trucks of different brands and ages going through Euro Auctions tomorrow, may be worth watching if only to get and idear of what things are making at auction

I just treated my hilux with that stuff. I’ll be interested to see how it fares against a winter of forestry roads. I’m hoping it’s a winner.

Looking at an L200 on Thursday. Maybe a step down from a Hilux but it's a 2016 mk 7 and a rare club cab model, one owner in mint condition with extremely low miles. Near enough brand new.

If I buy it I might treat it to Red Dot's rust proofing treatment mentioned in his rust thread.
