My son is quite interested in getting involved n making biltong or jerky…….

Any good off the shelf machines for making it that can be bought? Also recommendations for recipes etc would help!

I’m obviously thinking it might be good to make some venison jerky or biltong but I think my boy would be just as happy with beef 😂

We have a " Ninja" food thing and it's also a dehydrator with a couple of simple recipes for jerky.
Or if you want a specific dehydrator plenty on evilbay atb

If you decide to buy, look at the Excalibur dehydrator. Makes excellent biltong as well as fruit leathers, dried banana, mango, etc.
I have a black 9 drawer one that I need to sell if you're interested. Dries it fast, I've also made my own DIY box which takesa lot longer but possibly a more authentic final product...

Mike if you’re still at kynamco you’re welcome to come and see my biltong box to take inspiration, they are scarily simple and I’d strongly recommend making one yourself rather than spending money on them as I did, really no need. Some of the best droewors I’ve made was using a clothes airer and a fan to keep air moving, not using the box as I’d made too much and it would t fit in….there really is nothing to it.

In fact if you’re there tomorrow morning I’ll be popping by to grab a recoil pad and can happily stick in in the truck for you to have a gander

I agree with the above. A home made box is easy and cheap. You can also decide on size/fan/light. I think mine was certainly less than £10.

as above, you can make your own or have a look at these guys, they do lots of spice kits too if you don’t make your own closely guarded secret recipe!

Yep as above, build a bow from ply with aeration holes, fix a bulb holder in there and get your self the old type 60 watt bulb which will give the heat required and you are away .. Don't use metal hooks for the hanging of the meat if possible, get some cheap plastic hooks as there is less chance of meat contamination.

Not really what your asking but just some advice, some years ago I brought a jerky gun. This looks much like a silicone gun only you load it with ground meat, I have used mine many times and I find the finished product much easier to chew, also if you wish to try making dried meat products without the expense it can be done in an oven with the light on and fan running, same principle as Mike Ls post

Maybe some inspiration here?

Ok here's my recipe equal amounts of sea salt pepper and toasted coriander seeds ground in a pestle and mortar. Soak meat in balsamic vinegar and mix for 4 to 8 hours. I add some more mix and some chilli flakes after patting the meat dry. Put in biltong box for 3 to 4 days.

I have recently made a biltong dryer out of a storage box but am unsure what light bulb and fan to get. Has anyone got any ideas?

Regards
Olly
