My diary of my FAC application 😵‍💫

A bit of trivia for you. The opening scenes in that movie where all hell breaks loose with folk getting attacked and cars crashing was filmed in and around George Square, in Glasgow City Center.
I was actually there on one of the day filming.
So very little acting required then? 😉

So the latest update is no progress, just like everyone else I know of in the application process. 12 months plus seems the norm now for all I've met who have applied recently.
It is what it is, the wait continues.

Latest update..... Still nothing. And looks like it'll be much much longer as I'm moving house soon. Arghhhhh!

D and C have processed my 1 for 1 in 4 weeks

FEO has spent a good couple of hours with me listing all serial numbers on barrels and bolts for my Blaser

He had to go back to Home Office a couple of times to get additional categories listed in the drop down lists of the database they use for categorisation

He was concerned about correctly listing what I have so that I didn’t fall foul of authorities whilst travelling abroad

Apparently someone from D and C got in a muddle whilst taking a switch barrel to Portugal and spent 24 hours in the clink whilst D and C tried to resolve the issue

The problem lay with trying to list switch barrel components on a database built to list rifles

I was trying to get back into Queen St station to catch a train home on that day.

I am still in disbelief that they didn't offer me a leading role....

I received a voicemail this morning from my FÈO saying that as my 8 week extension expires on 13 July he has issued temporary permits which allow me to still use my guns legally but can't buy any ammo.

What is going on, my renewal has been in since January?

At the end of the day, it is no secret that both the police and the Home Office want to see the end of private gun ownership. If by slowing the system down to a virtual standstill, whilst being able to blame Covid, GP lack of participation, or the additional work load brought on by the Plymouth incident, then they will deter new applications and even see previous owners giving the sport up. Furthermore, if it puts RFDs out of business then that only discourages even more people from participating in gun ownership.

They already know that if they revoke someone’s licence on some trumped up pretence then there is zero chance that it will be challenged in the courts due to the outlandish costs that would be incurred by the complainant, especially now that BASC have withdrawn their support through the insurance that they once offered.

I’m afraid that we’re on a very slippery slope and I personally believe that I will see the end of recreational shooting within my lifetime.
Yes, the problem being someone cant get one or knows its going to be hard joining BASC and getting help was way too easy a route to take . Such a case can cost many thousands. Mind you it was always a myth that all cases where taken , BASC needed to see a very clear chance of a win ( usually without an actual court appearance ) . All the time risking the reputation just by via a "wrong un" having used up a lump of " Membership subscriptions" .
Once you tell your firearms dept you are going to challenge them in court , your certs are removed and you do a deal with them on the court steps because they do not want your win to act as any kind of example . Only then do they give in
BASC still have a fund available and its to fight anything that might set any kind of precedent, not gain an FAC for an ex-villan or known alcoholic or drug addict etc .
I was offered a free defense on a decision once , but knowing about them having the std Revocation till settled , i did my own negotiations. It would be a none issue today, my own force actually rely on BASC advice and training themselves, i know some the reasons for that but it needs to stay hushed.

Part of the issue is down to a simple numbers game. There are currently more applications in than there are staff to process them in reasonable time and this seems endemic across the country. Having just recently moved, I advised my licensing department of my new address weeks ago and had my gun cabs in on day 1. I was contacted a few days back and advised that they're a little short staffed with people off work and it could be quite a wait until my inspection is done and my certs updated with the new address. I expect it could be months. Whilst I still have the certs, technically I shouldn't use them to buy ammunition with as the address is not current. They have amended their records to ensure I'm legal for ownership and storage but I still need new certs issued.

There seems a reluctance amongst authorities to up budgets enough to put a couple of extra FEOs on the payrole, as they have capped budgets for these departments. I would imagine that there is a decent pool of knowledgeable people out there who would apply for the roles if they come up, but glancing at the vacancies pages randomly across forces, there seems precious little in the way of opportunities. If these things cannot be processed in reasonable time, then the PCC's are there to be petitioned to put pressure on the authorities to up budgets accordingly as 12 months wait, or even a 6 month wait is in no one's interests and whilst waits are this long, the waiting list and waiting times only grow further. The guys working in the licensing departments seem rushed off their feet and heaping pressure on them further won't do anyone any good. I reckon they're doing the best job that they can given their very limited resources.

So, a month on, latest update with my application 9 months after submitting all forms, references, medical GP stuff and everything else..... Nothing. And to throw a spanner in the works, I'm shortly moving house.
I can't complain too much, the previously mentioned fellow shooting club member has now hit 2 years and 2 months. Utterly unacceptable.

Very true. At the end of the day, it's a under resourced, low priority area. It's us who abide by the law who suffer. I do worry it'll tempt people to not stay legal and create another precedent which ultimately will make it even harder for us.

It is what it is i am afraid, what else can you do?

You either want an FAC or you dont!

Hmmm. I suffered endured the same sort of prolonged crap renewal many years ago so finally wrote to the Chief Constable inviting him to the first anniversary party of my application and asking how many colleagues he wished to bring so that I could determine the size of cake required. I also pointed out that my understanding of the Sale of Goods Act/Consumer Credit Act was that he was in breach having cashed my cheque many, many months ago but had not provided the paid for goods so I intended to summons him by name to the Small Claims Court. Three days later my fac appeared in my doorway - an hour after the postman had been! Funny old world innit?

Disgraceful. I think that I would be starting to bug the local PCC and my MP for all the good it would achieve. They are the only recourse to trying to change the system that we have unfortunately.
