How’do All! Hopefully this will be one of my shorter ramblings (unlikely though!)……

Ok, so I’m trying to help a pal out (albeit the only actual help I’m doing is writing this post!) whose had a funny old time of a few things just lately (I won’t go any further into detail as I don’t want this to be a sob story type post & im not looking for something for nothing - I mean, personally, I’m not looking at all 😂😂)

Anyways - a friend of mine is a serving WO2 with the Royal Engineers & newly posted to Bulford (Salisbury) and slowly trying to get himself into the deer stalking ways! I’ve had him out for a tag along day up in Scotland (where he was based) and was planning to take him out with me on my ground in the Borders (and still will!) until he was posted so far south. He currently doesn’t hold an FAC but is in the application stages (slightly complicated as his permanent residence is in NI & he’s a serving British Soldier) but is a very safe pair of hands with a firearm and an excellent standard of fitness.

He’s quite like me, when I started (well, aside of the fitness ha ha) - looking for opportunities to get out & learn ahead of the chance to pull a trigger.

I appreciate that I’ve seen offers from members in the past to take serving lads or vets/police etc out on discounted or even free days - I’m not asking for that (unless someone feels they’d like to do that) nor suggesting that a serving soldier “deserves” special treatment (indeed I’d ideally not like this post to turn into a debate of any sort at all!) but really rather just looking for someone genuine who’ll be fairly local to him and prepared to offer a reasonable, flat fee to come along, learn, get involved and maybe get on a beast or two without the complications of pricing structures and trophies and shot fees and what not (again, not the time or place to debate how anyone makes a living!).

He’s just completed his DSC1 through the BDS up near Kinloss.

If that’s something you think you could help with please shot me a message and if not - that’s perfectly fine too (you probably just don’t need to tell me 😂😂😂😂😂)

Cheers for reading if you’ve made it this far!!

Has he tried to join DDM? I haven’t lived down that way in over a decade, so can’t help I’m afraid.

He is in one of the most Roe Deer populated MOD areas. Tell him to get in touch with the PDM of the area and get his name down.
The DDM system has one of the best training programs and in this particular area plenty of members to take him out.
I'm sorry I can't name names but I am sure he should be able to find either a member or who to contact through some of the shoot members or keepers.

I think that is potentially in the plan. Without another convoluted tale, one of my best mates still serves up in Forres, and became friends with this guy through him. He too, is fairly new to stalking and we did our DSC1 together ran, in part, by a guy who’d been their ASM and had recently retired - I knew him separately through his Father in Law (shooting is quite a small world ha ha!) - anyway - the ex ASM guy had been heavily involved in DDM and has been giving my other mate lots of advice around joining. Both lads are, wisely in my opinion, wanting to just learn as much as they can and get some early experience before they bite off more than they go chew. Of course as @EMcC suggests, existing DDM guys may well be a great source of contact (just as you guys are!)

Unfortunately you just missed a DDM range day at Bulford last Monday.
That is the Range competence test that is required by all members to pass periodically.

Unfortunately, his wait will be a long one to join DDM as applicants have to have a FAC with a deer legal rifle and DSC1 before they can apply. If he goes into the Defence Gateway he will find the DDM SharePoint site with the membership details, form and contact details. As it always has been for all the time I have been aware of DDM, the waiting list is long (average 18 months to get accepted as a Potential Member) but as others have said the training is first class and the opportunities in the South West, especially for Roe, are amongst the best in the UK. Its certainly worth the effort!

Was chatting to him earlier and he has made the very initial stages of getting the ball rolling with DDM. I really appreciate all of the feedback and suggestions and have passed them on!

Fancy anything to do with the MOD taking a long time though….. unusual….. 🙄😂😂

He’ll be an expert in a high seat. Sit around for hours on end with little information and unsure what’s going on? Years of practice!

I’ve had many jobs in my “career” and certainly never found a civvie organisation with even half the ability to f***k people about! And some have really tried 😂

I’ve updated the thread as I really don’t want to take advantage! Several guys have been in touch and offered to help my pal out so I’d rather anyone else who’d read this and offer does the same for another new starter or just to give back a little.

I find myself quite humbled by the responses.

As ever, I appreciate all of the replies and especially those who have offered what they can. Other than a few scrapes in Ripon; a few more in Germany and an unfortunate misunderstanding as a young Troopy in the JRC at Otterburn 😂😂 I was fortunate enough to have never been in real danger - both these lads that I’ve mentioned above have done multiple tours of Iraq, Afghan and NI and whilst you don’t ever need to agree what our politicians send these folks to do, I think it is very commendable when people chose to show some gratitude for their service.

Thanks!!
