Long nose cut? Advice welcome!

This is something I’ve struggled with previously so looking for suggestions.

I’m basically after a method to do a long nose on a stag which removes the teeth but keeps the full nasal bone intact. I’ve a jig for roe which I’m still not convinced about but the stags won’t fit in it anyway.

Is it easier to cut nose first, down to the spine to get a better line?

If I saw through the base of the teeth, will they fall out at boiling?

Do many of you use something to sand it out after so it’s completely flat / level?

Any tips welcome! The cleaning is the easy bit. It’s getting the cut right is a nightmare.. Thanks!

Basically after this, without loosing that small section in the eye socket. Taxidermist did this one previously for me.

Take a line through the ear to the tip of the nose this will leave the roof of the mouth but remove the teeth apart from the tusks (which you will probably have removed in any case , you can get a jig for
cutting stag heads but I prefer to do it
freehand.
Cut from either side then cut from the top to join the previous cuts less likely to go off at an angle when cut this way if slightly off they can be trued up with a belt sander or even an angle grinder with
a grinding disc makes a good clean job
wear a mask if sanding or grinding bone dust is not a good thing to breath

Lay it on its side and cut it with a steady eye and hand. Always worked for me. Do it before boiling too if you can.

If you get the angle slightly off you can turn over and come from the other side to straighten.

As @bogtrotter says. Skin the head, take a line from the ear hole to the front of the teeth. Both sides, then cut from the top and join all the cuts up. Easier if you have someone to hold the head for you.

First skin it and remove lower jaw. Next, place the back of the head on the corner of a low bench, such that the nose is pointing at the sky and the tips of the antlers are resting on the floor. Put your saw right across in front of the back teeth and cut straight down. You should just clear the eye sockets.

(Before doing any of the above, ask yourself whether it's really necessary to cut it at all? Personally I prefer to display the whole thing, and feel that cutting spoils them and is disrespectful to the animal).

Perfect description in my opinion.

Skin head, cut before boiling. Tip it upside down and cut from the base of the teeth in a line to the ear. If you have a vice or black and decker workmate it will help you no end

Personally much prefer the full skull, but if a cut skull is required, although more work, I cut them after cleaning, as find it easier to get everything straight without the tissue on there.

You can get a red sized cutting jig, which is just a larger version of the usual Roe sized one, can't really go wrong with that.

Cheers guys. This helped a lot! Managed a nice clean cut. The estate with the best of intentions cut the back of the skull a little squint so might need to sand it flat. But the noise to jaw angle cut very nicely just now so appreciate it.

Now to try and find a big enough pan!

How do you chaps fix the skull to the shield please, keeping the fix hidden.
You can muck about with the clamps that bushwear have, the wall fittings that screwfix sell but nowadays for all species I use a suitably sized self tapper or two if there isn’t enough bone at the nose end of the brain cavity (or two into back of skull at thickest point).

Use a ruler to assist marking the shield and drill 1.5/2mm pilot holes in the skull and screw in by hand. Honestly people overthink stuff and I’ve not had a trophy come away yet.

Thanks appreciate that.
I put mine in from the back so you don’t see them. Lay the shield face down, place the heid on it where you want it and draw round with a pencil. Use your ruler to work out where to drill holes in shield to line it up with a bit of bone with some thickness and hey presto.

The arrow shows where I put two screws, one each side through the back as described.
