Scope lens cleaning

Any tips and tricks on getting debris/water droplets off your scope lense?

Was out yesterday evening and got caught in a bit of a shower, few water drops got on the lens before I closed over the caps. I tried to wipe it as gently as I could with a lens cloth but there must be a better way?

Don't like wiping the lens.

Lenses will always need to be wiped, just make sure you use a quality "Lens Wipe", not bog roll as it's too coarse.

Buy a Swarovski CSB cleaning kit, and follow the instructions - they are very good and work really well and will last a long time.

It includes sachets with wipes and you can take some of these with you out stalking.

Yeah I just picked up the Zeiss lens cleaning kit. I have been using Vortex lens cleaner and the supplied lens cloth that came with the scope

Spent 35 years as a photographer and used to clean lenses worth £500.00-£10,000 with a cotton handkerchief. Never caused any damage. Good enough for rifle scopes in my opinion.

Haw on the affected lens and give it a wipe with your t-shirt or shirt tail.
For stubborn spots and stains give them a little lick and then wipe. Damp quilted bog roll from your jacket pocket works too, just blow on it first to get rid of the grit.

A compressed air duster is great for blowing off water droplets and grit!

If there are particles on your lens you risk scratching it when you wipe, no matter how soft your cloth is.

I've heard of those freezing the coatings if you spray too much.

I have scratched a cheap Hawke scope on my .22lr by just wiping water off. Not a big deal, but I've just bought a Razor LHT for my stalking rifle and trying to preserve the glass as much as possible.

I've been using the lens pens for years with good results.
If using lens wipes I always use a lens brush first to remove any particles before wiping

You would have to spray very close for a long time, not something what would happen normally.
Most scopes are rated down to -20*c anyway.

They work best with small blasts anyway

I agree. I've been a keen amateur photographer for most of my adult life and clean cotton hankies worked for me and I've never seen any damage or degadation of image quality. I do occasionally use a spray and wipe with a tissue when I notice signs of oily film from traffic etc. Any decent lens glass has multiple protective coatings and minor marks on the front lens will be so out of focus as to be invisible while in use.
