Powder choice for .243 75g vmax and .223 50g vmax

Before I go and waste a load of money on powders that will work but not the most suitable, what are people using in their .243win with 75gr vmax and .223rem 50gr vmax? I know there is an element of get what’s available but if I can sort a list of most suitable powders I can then see what I can get hold of, rather than me getting 5 different pots of powder and only using a few hundred grains out of them

Ps using federal large rifle and small rifle standard primers if that makes much of a difference

Vihtavuori N140 should work for you. They do a great smart phone App that will give you the full details. I use it with 65gr Vmax in the 243 and it works a treat but looks like you could also use it in the 223.

Hope this helps..

N140 is what I had been looking at for the .243
I’m not looking at one powder to do both and more than likely I will get one type for each but I don’t want to have to get 2 or 3 powders per calibre as I’ll end up with more powder than Guy Fawkes!
Quite like the look of the Hodgdon Superformance powder as that was the factory ammo I used to fire until it got as rare as hens teeth

Thanks chaps, I’ve managed to get hold of some N133 for the .223 and have got a pot of N540 to try in the .243 as N140 is a bit scarce. Hopefully I can work a decent load up for 65gr vmax as there doesnt seem to be any data for 75gr vmax

Henry Kranks have Superformance in stock.
Ken.

RL-15 I don't recall the exact charge but it worked well for me. If data exists for CFE 223 that should work very well.

Superformance is too slow , relative burn rate comparable to N165 and RS70.

N133 is an excellent choice for the 50grain in 223 as is 130 and 135 .

N540 is a high energy propellant , work up carefully and you're supposed to use the next bullet weight up for data . I suspect you'll get a low case fill which may well translate into large ES numbers . Pure speculation on my part , but please come back and share your findings.

Personally , I'm not a fan of ball powders . They meter well , but can be a little peeky . I know other people use them with excellent results , I had good results with X-terminator but definitely prefer N133 .

You could ask if an SD member would run QL for the N540 but remember there's no real shortcuts and the results are theoretical , you still need to do load development and adhere to safe practices .

With those bullet choices in those cartridges you need to or you will have an ‘okay’ compromise. Either that or go up in weight on the .223 55/60 gr if you want to share powder.
