Why aren't there semi-auto .22 Hornet rifles in the UK?

I was not recommending anything.....
I understand that. I'm just adding that it wouldn't be feasible. Production cost would be crazy and that's after all the R&D. And I'm talking cartridge, not rifle. Think of the problems encountered in 17HMR. ~Muir

Iirc savage currently are using a delayed blow back action in their auto HMR and WMR. It probably would handle the WSM rimfire....if it already hasn't!

Understand the point about the Home Office wielding the ban hammer if a semi auto legal rimfire were to approach the performance of a .223. Also about it not being economic just for the U.K.

I would have thought it would not be difficult to make a new high power 22 rimfire cartridge though, or manufacture a gun to put it in.

Could be delayed blowback or even a full gas piston system.

As has been said... Semi auto's are only permitted in .22 rimfire chamberings, in the UK.
So that covers the lr, wmr, cb caps, longs etc

Making a more powerful rimfire runs into the need for the rim to be soft enough for it to act as a primer vs chamber pressure etc.
If someone were to do that, then either a ban on a specific item would follow, as they did with lever release or a tigntening of the definitions to permit only 22lr. That is something that was covered in the recent consultation to do with miniature rifle range exemptions. Where the act currently defines them as being less than .23 calibre.
Though given the general direction things tend to go, they will make any ban as wide as they can manage. So a full ban on semi auto's, and any fast actions, such as unberlevers, pumps etc. And whilst they are at it, let the ban roll over to shotguns as well.

the hornady vmax 30grain .22wmr shoot at 2200 fps what is pretty good. don't think they work to well in the semi autos though

Rimfires have, I think always been small bore rounds. (Although probably someone will be along shortly to refute that, so maybe I should say mostly always). The obsolete pin fire system was used in larger calibre pistols, but that died out for a reason. A few reasons really, when compared to more modern systems (such as rimfire and centre fire).
A friend picked up a nice Rolling block pistol in .41 rimfire calibre last week.
