Africa outfitters? (SA)

Right folks, some of you might have seen the Canada / Africa thread. I’ve basically come to the conclusion that a black bear hunt, with a potential CITES ban is just too much of a gamble to pencil in up front. Maybe if things fall through then one day…

So I’ve decided South Africa makes a lot more sense due to 1) lots of new animals to see and 2) you can actually hunt 4-5 plains game for the same price.

Can anyone recommend an outfitter? I have one or two shortlisted but the more I can get on here, the better. I figured, most folk on here would want a large area and decent spot and stalk so goals should be the same.

My other question is regarding costs to work out my required savings.

I basically have 1) flights, trophy package, tips, dip and pack, taxidermy - probably done in the uk so that I can do it as needed and realistically get more feedback/input from the taxidermist.

Dip and pack looks to be around $150 per animal? Skull and cape. I assume this is just a ‘treated’ skull as there’s a separate price for a euro mount.

I’ve basically ruled out Namibia because I don’t think it’s malaria free which is a big factor,(I’m terrible with mosquitoes at the best of times) and 2) I don’t think they have nyala or impala, certainly a couple of animals I was looking at anyway.

Reviews welcome. So many outfitters! There is a good African hunting forum which is helpful but it does seem wired around a lot of site sponsorship from outfitters so the reviews seem a little skewed.

Thanks!

I would go with one of the two you have penciled in as it is your trip also what the next reply to trot along will be from a person who had a great time in their eyes, what ever you get there will be highs and lows.
Been to SA/Moz twice on x2 6 week trips mainly diving but did go out with the farms .338 had a bushbuck in the scope but was a female so shot a baboon on the way back!
Good guests make good trips I know from years of taking people diving also having large groups book a week of heaven or hell. I have had guides on boats and called the office to change them for the next day as my group is here for a week and I need to take them where I need to go not where the guide wants to for an easy week.

Huntershill Safaris - Huntershill Safaris is about 50,000 acres and malaria free as it's high (they sometimes get snow in the winter.)

I hunted the main camp at Huntershill (they own 4 or 5) in 2018 and had a great time. I did a write up here:

SOUTH AFRICA: Huntershill Safaris Cull Plains Game In The Eastern Cape SA

Part 1 I embarked on very much an entry ‘level’ African safari this year and hunted cull plains game for a couple of days in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. I now have the bug! We have been to Africa before but on photographic safaris only. My eldest daughter has been volunteering for a...

I am going with Patrick this September which would be my fifth time out with Bushwack Safaris.

I dont think you will go fae wrong with umlilo safaris. They not only guide and outfit Sa but other African countries as well. And they organise everything right upto you trophies arriving in uk.

You are inevitably going to get lots of different opinions on this one and my reply is no different. I hunted with Chris Troskie at CT Safaris in Limpopo and had a great time.

Both Chris and his wife Sabina are truly lovely people and do everything they can to make their guests incredibly welcome. From the moment Chris picked us up at Johannesburg airport to the moment we were dropped off they were a delight to be with and Sabrina’s cooking was truly exceptional.
We hunted buffalo cow, warthog, mountain reedbuck and kudu over 4 days and had a great time and made memories that will last a lifetime. I fully intend to return and hunt hippo with Chris. The nice thing we found was that Chris and Sabina only take one group at a time and this means that compromises are generally not needed as the plan is made around what your group want to do. The hunting is all fair chase which was important for us although as with most areas there were high fences present. These fences did not interfere with the hunt at all as the enclosures were vast. Good quality camp rifles are available if needed. Looking at Chris’s instagram feed he has been bagging some exceptional specimens recently if that floats your boat.

Feel free to PM if I can help at all.

I’ve basically ruled out Namibia because I don’t think it’s malaria free

In 2019 I spent a week with Khomas Hunting safaris in a malaria-free area of Namibia 1 hour drive from the airport. Property is part of a wider conservancy. Heusis farm is approx 13kmx5km IIRC. But no high fences, so animals range over a huge area. Prices will have moved a bit, and my wife added 1k to the tab as she accompanied me as an observer, but to get an idea:

Most of Namibia is malaria free and they do have impala !

I have done two trips to SA doing plains game. Both trips have worked out around £1000 a day by the time I get the taxidermy home.

To give you an idea on 2022 taxidermy prices, however I know they have risen a fair bit this year

I have been to SA twice now with Settlers Safaris on cull plans. The hunting, accommodation and meals are fantasti, they really take care of you.
Also been with settlers safaris on numerous occasions and due out again soon, can only confirm what Colonel says that you are very well looked after from start to finish, excellent service.

There’s loads of great outfitters out there, I have hunted with Aloe africa hunting safaris 2 years in a row, and. 3rd trip planned. Fantastic huge areas and some free range areas, treated like a king, great people all around!
Really do make you feel like one of the family, have become great friends.
Africa gets a hold of you, good luck 👌🏼

Parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga in South Africa still have malaria just FYI. If you are hunting in the dry season then it is not something you need to factor in.
