45/70 vs 30-30 underlever

Here is a guy that knows the know.
30-30 is fine at short range.
He also points out the handling aspects of a levergun affording quick follow up shots, something I feel is becoming a foreign aspect of hunting by many!

Browning BLR in 308 if you really want a lever action, would my preference but if you fixed on 45/70 and 30/30 the police may view them as marginal when either could work with the right ammo.

I had a 45-70 …. Meh It’s ok but got the hump with it so ended up with a .444 marlin
Now that’s a tractor gun !
And nothing walks away .
Did you reload the 45-70, it’s no slouch when loaded with suitable powders, and basically the same thing as the .444 marlin. It can nudge 4000 ft-lb with 4198 and a 24” barrel….

Deer is listed as good reason for 45-70 in the guidance and as posted above can make dangerous game muzzle energies. I am getting north of 3000 ft-lb with an 18.5” barrel, not sure what margin that hovers around?

If it were me, I'd look at 45-70. I agree, factory "full fat" loads can be a handful but if you load you have a lot of flexibility.

Cast plinking loads all the way up to something more powerful (A 350gr bullet at decent speed does a lot of good things from the hunters perspective to deer and boar).

Scrummy

Totally get that having used it in Africa a fair bit and didn’t feel under gunned but that’s never stopped the FEOs disagreeing!!!

This argument carries weight (sorry) with me as I use partial loads for my black powder target shooting. Would like to get into reloading but probably don't do enough shooting these days to make it worth the investment :(

The .45-70 is crazy versatile. From mild trapdoor loads with 250gn bullets to red hot 405gn loads, you really can have it all with that rifle.

My favourite load is the 405gn Remmy core lokt stuff, that hits like the hammer of Thor.

Personally I’d go .45-70. I love mine.

A single stage press will get you a lot of the way there

I have shot both the 45-70 and the .444
Just my opinion that the .444 is a nicer cartridge to shoot and for the uk and driven boar on the continent. I have noticed over the years lots of people getting and then selling the 45-70 and say it has hardly been used ! Where as the .444 Marin owners tend to say that it would be one of there last rifles the sold .

I went with a 30-30 (Marlin 336) so I could stick a moderator on it. However now I have one I’m not risking losing the front sight for a mod.
It’s not my only rifle though, it’s something different. Light weight, easy to handle and the 1-6 scope gives me the flex to shoot out to 200m if required but the fast target acquisition for closer shots.

Are you using it for Boar though ? Standing just right there on the ground facing the Wild boar ?

Sat in a hide next to a friend with a 45-70. I shoot a 30-06 myself, which makes a bang, and was not really taking much notice as he prepared to fire. At the last moment I casually placed my fingers in my ears gently, and watched the target he was shooting at. Bloody hell. Did it wake me up ! Never again will I sit next to one, at any price. The noise and the blast from one are enormous. My advice is that you stay well away from them.
