Notifying Police Scotland of Shooting

I would love to get it in writting, and definitely will if this goes more to a foxing/roe thing rather than a one off.

Exactly my concern, feels like I do it once it's going to be something that needs doing every time.
In this situation, where you may get complaints or issues I would 100% get something in writing, even if it’s just a text saying ‘is it still ok to check zero in xxxxx field tomorrow’ and his text confirmation.

If not, and there is an issue, you are leaving yourself wide open to him denying permission.

I have one farm which is the main dog walking area for half of the town, it’s also within 1/2 mile if county police HQ.

If I am stalking on there in the morning or evening I call it in, I have had people call in and report shooting / people with guns on there and the previous person who had the permission had the chopper up and an mp5 pointed at him at one point.

The time I had the police called the caller was actually stood next to a sign saying pest control shooting taking place. I had called in and got a log number, the police called me and confirmed it was me, no further action.

I also do all my zeroing and load testing on the same farm but on an area where the public have no access, I don’t ever call this in.

Likewise any of the other 5 areas of land I shoot I don’t worry about calling it in.

Hello - Quick question about the need to notify police scotland of intended shooting.

Local farmer has very kindly given verbal permission to zero up some new scopes before the Hind season in one of his fields. The field he has given is about 500m as the crow flies from the starts of a village. The rifle that I'm zeroing has a mod on it, it's a .270 so pretty loud, and as it's zeroing it's not just going to the one off shot, also now the light is going I'll be out there about 5:30pm so prime movement time.

The field is perfectly safe, will be shooting with my back to the village and has a good backstop.

Normally I have been very far away so don't need to bother about this kind of thing. I'm just trying to avoid any stress and compliants from the Police or hassle for the farmer as this is potentially going to blossom into a new Roe permission!

Is it worth notifying Police Scotland and filling in the form etc, or am I just overthinking this and should get on out there? I have an open ticket, I have every right to be there?

Anyone had experiences like this?

Cheers
Just crack on with it .

I have an e-mail from the Police saying that it is advisable to notify the control room and obtain a log number, in addition to carrying with me both my certificate and written permission. I take the advisable to mean an instruction, which I have no problem with by the way.

I know, but it's in writing and on record and I can't help but be obsessive regarding keeping on side with licensing.
Yeah, it's on record as advice. Just that. Not compulsory. Some situations might justify it (eg, pest control in urban areas), but most do not.
I'm sure you don't notify any authority every time you take your car out for a drive, which is another similarly legal activity that requires a bit of paper to say you have the necessary authority, and which is extremely dangerous and far more likely to result in you killing someone.

I know of a certain gentleman who notified police of everytime he went out. It subsequently transpired that he did not have the lawful permission to shoot over the land on which he was shooting, as the greenskeeper who was his friend, did not have the lawful authority to give such permission. There was a clear trail of evidence. He was prosecuted and the sheriff wasn’t overly impressed.

.270 near a town not my choice. To get one on your ticket you will have a permission suitable so zero it there and if you are shooting near a town with fox and roe. a moderated small caliber rifle would be best. I call the cops most times i go out and have had the same as Slider. David are you still out at that bit of ground. Saves a lot of **** and if cops turn up because of a public nuisance call they will check you inside out.Ken for story.webp

As others have said, I'd not call the police.
I have a similar permission. Undulating with safe backstops, but a golf course to one side, a campsite to the other.

IMHO, what is essential, is written permission to shoot on the land. (A text or email would be fine).

In addition , as a curtesy, I text the farmer each time I go.

If i am managing in an Urban area i always let the cops know. This can save a lot of trouble and save police time. When i am out in my more scenic areas i don't bother.
