Hi all I'm new to shooting in general , and I finally gotten my licence 🙂 now the question is which .22lr do I go to I'm torn between sako quad range , cz457 lpr or tikka t1x.

Holts have them from £2-£50. The .22lr has virtually become worthless since the pending lead ban, you can’t give them away.

On the back of that, as VSS says, buy a cheap old Brno or CZ as you might be scrapping it before you know

I asked the same question on here last year, and based on members' recommendations I ended up with a CZ 457, which I am very pleased with.

One thing to note regarding the CZ 457 is that there's a bewildering array of models and variants to choose from, including match rifles (if this is of interest) and that's even before discussing the stock options..... so it's important to choose the right variant for your needs.

What will you be using the rifle for?

Second hand CZ if it looks ok it is ok and you should get a good one under £200 . Then buy real good ammo. We might yet loose the .22rf as it is today so dont pour a load of money on one . These guns are made to shoot 40 grain none jacketed soft lead bullets . Oh remember the moderator !
Me ? i have two CZ 452 here had them many years bought SH originally put eight shots in one hole at 100 yards once , thought i was missing after the first shot and ended up getting someone to spot for me in the sand - both fine and we looked at each other and said " its a one hole screamer " and it was . Everything that CZ did after the 452 was marketing imo .

Every gunshop in the land will have a rack full of s/h 22s at ridiculously cheap prices. My father bought a mint condition Mauser 201 for £75 a few years back and I sold it for £400 to a collector.
Although I have a T1X, but in 17HMR, you can’t go wrong with a CZ or BRNO, and as others have said they could very well become nothing more than scrap in a couple of years so cheap s/h would be a sensible route.

As above, what are you using it for?
If its small game and informal target shooting a second hand bolt action in the mid range will do nicEly.
If you plan on more formal target work, your choices will be much more limited and probably more expensive.
A decent Anschutz sporter can cover both bases.

That's odd. I can understand plinking, i.e. if you do a thousand rounds in one morning then expensive ammo will spoil the fun. But for hunting? How many rounds do you fire in a hunt? The overall price difference would be negligible. I really don't see hunters ditching their .22LRs because the ammo is more expensive.

I wasn't suggesting buy the BRNO because it's old and cheap! I was suggesting it because they're damn good rifles. Particularly the model 2.

Mainly target shooting , maybe prs in the future...

Unless they discover a new element there won’t be ANY alternative to lead, cheap or expensive.
Why does a bullet have to be made from metal at all?
I think I might buy a little lathe and start turning my own bullets from ebony. It's significantly heavier per cubic metre than the current lead alternative (copper), it's non toxic and it's biodegradable.
Win win all round, I say!

Would ebony HPs expand?
