Re driven wild boar in the UK

I was just wondering if it will ever happen to be having driven wild boar days in the UK, same as on the continent.
Or is it not legal?
Regards
Martin

Well it is illegal to drive deer in the UK.

But there is very limited legislation regarding Wild boar.

Interesting question :D

There have been 'driven' days but this was where boar were let loose within a fenced enclosure and driven to standing guns. That caused a stir. It would be difficult to organise a european style driven wild hunt here because the numbers of boar aren't quite there yet although there is nothing to stopping someone having a go with some trusted guns if they knew boar were present and land owners were on board.

Well if you can use beaters with dogs to move game birds then boar with no status yet are ok too. Nothing says you can't as such.

Since Boar are mammals and not birds... South of the border you'd be limited to two dogs by the hunting Act 2004 .... Not ideal really.

In Scotland we can still flush to guns with dogs under control, or so I believe.

if I wasnt interested I wouldnt have asked , is it illegal to drive deer and why
Not illegal,quite legal
Few beaters moving quietly through wood can be productive for does/hinds,with a few well placed guns at other side, better with beaters with wind in their back, can only be done once or twice a season as the deer cotton on,dogs at heel as well not running about
So no it's legal to drive deer in uk

Thats what i thought , more moving deer than driving them to get your numbers at the end of the season , right ?

Sorry when I said Illegal to drive deer I should have said in the european sense, using loads of dogs and beaters.

There is a massive difference between a deer movement over here (which is legal) and a european driven hunt.

I attend driven hunts here every chance I get. Great sport, fantastic music from the pack of foot-hounds, guaranteed adrenalin fix every time... but no Boar.

The legalities of using more than two dogs to drive mammals in England and Wales and the very small likelihood of finding a single willing landowner with enough ground and boar makes it practically impossible to contemplate ever having European style driven boar here. There's also the issue of firearms and the use of them in a potentially dangerous situation with inexperienced users.

I have had some experience of driving deer in the sense of a couple of people moving quietly through a wood moving deer towards waiting rifles but this is also potentially dangerous especially if the waiting rifles are not sufficiently well disciplined. I've been in one situation when I was doing the driving with a trusted friend and whilst we kept each other in view the whole time and presented no threat to each other, despite being told to stay where he was until someone came to pick him up, one of the waiting rifles took it upon himself to go walkabout and put himself in a position where he was where we both thought it safe to shoot. Thankfully I saw him and my companion did not take a shot in the "wrong" direction before he also became aware of the fact that there was a problem and so a nasty accident was avoided.

is it two dogs per drive or per handler?
edit:

I thought you could drive deer from cover so long as it wasn't mechanically ie with vehicles? Well in Scotland anyway?

There are safety issues of course.
Best practise in Germany is that all participents shooters & beaters & dogs wear hi-vis clothing, orange is best.
Shooting should be only from high seats to ensure the stray bullets or through shots enter the ground in short order with no or little richochets, the boxes are basically open topped boxes on stilts about 2.5 to 3 metres high.
The German state of Meckenburg Vorpommern on the Polish border has initiated this now as hunting law.
Regards and thanks for the input.

is it two dogs per drive or per handler?

Hunting Act 2004 (Englandshire etc) Provided you meet the other criteria for exempt activity you must still comply with...

(5) The third condition is that the stalking or flushing out does not involve the
use of more than two dogs.

So, it's neither really "per drive" nor "per handler" it's a max of 2 dogs "involved", period. I suppose you could have one set of two dogs "involved" at one point and then another two dogs "involved" at a different point, so long as the first set were in no way still "involved", whatever that may mean. Good luck finding out.
