Hi all. A work colleague is applying for his first SGC. His GP has just returned his his incomplete medical form saying 'he doesn't agree with gun ownership'.

Best options please people as this has really disheartened him.

Cheers.
Geoff.

Formal complaint to gmc and swap practices and get all family members and friends to do same but be sure to tell practice mgr why! Hit them in the pocket

Shotgun Medicals is who I went with, good service and very prompt.

My GP said the same, again this should be brought into legislation, a GP needs to know they're professionally stating the mental side of the applicant not whether they agree with gun ownership. To be honest I respect their view as an individual but I also don't care, I want you to state in your professional capacity whether you are aware or have any concerns over my mental health period!

Don't use MedCert.
They let me down badly. Sent them the form and frr and nearly 4 months later, following a string of excuses they had still not produced a report.
I think we should all make a complaint to the GMC and our local MPs every time a GP refuses on these grounds. Its outright discrimination and GPs do not have the right to judge or impose their personal views on patients.

Ultimately the GP is being asked to carry out a box ticking exercise. If you have a lengthy medical history they will need to spend time going through your records. If you havent seen them in decades it should be simple exercise. I can see why some refuse as they are operating as a professional consultant out side the NHS. I dont agree with any of them refusing though as they arent being asked their personal opinion on firearms ownership. On that basis presumably some GP`s refuse to sign off HGV drivers as they may kill someone. Hmmm. Finally - probably the biggest mass killer in the UK - Harold Shipman - GP.

Each area has a local gp liason manager, send them an email. Uk gov doesn't state they have a compulsory duty but are urged to complete the form. The gp should be independent at the end of the day why should a gp have issues with say clays only.

Clearly an arsehole….its not about personal opinions - it’s stating the mental status of a patient. They should be forced to complete it.

I don’t like the oil and gas I help produce going to hipster, tree hugging green hypocrites but I have no say as it’s my job….this should be no different.
