Hi Lads.
I have a Tikka 243 with 20" barrel, im using Hornady 58g v-max, for the last few years iv'e been using ramshot hunter powder 50.7, i chose this powder as i thought then it would give maximum velocities, but didn't realise at the time this would be for a 24" barrel.
I am now wanting to use vihtavuori powder with the Hornady 58g v-max.
(1) can some one please tell me what vihtavuori powder will give the most velocity with a 20" barrel
(2) what velocity i will get with Vihtavuori n140 -------for which i already have, 20" barrel.
I understand that i will have to work up the load.

Thanks Dave (warbucks)

Why do you want max velocity.? Max accuracy I could understand! If you post all the cartridge and rifle details I expect some kind member might run it through Quickload for you.

Dave, use Vit N135 in a 20in barrel if your using the Drone on it, because its a tad faster burning than N140 so you won't get screen white out from the smoke, it's what I used in mine before I went for a longer barrel, Send me all your data and I will put it through quickload or GRT to give you a starting point

Tikka tx3 lite 20" barrel
Lapure brass
Hornady 58g v-max
Magtech large rifle primers.

I understand that maximum velocity without accuracy is no good -------but i would like to know what maximum velocity i can expect out of Vihtavuori n140 or what ever.
I have a barrel tuner available should i need to use it as well as normal load development.

Thanks Dave (warbucks)

Thanks Paul, but this is for a 23"/580mm barrel, just wanting to know the maximum for the 20" barrel, or there about's.

Thanks to "kevgun" for supplying me with the information i need

If you stay in reasonable barrel lengths, the consensus is that powder which is delivering the fastest velocity in longer barrel will also deliver fastest velocity in shorter barrel. Downside is, there might be powder burn after the bullet has exited the barrel, and this causes louder report and/or more wear to moderator. Also bit more recoil, since amount of powder and exit velocity will be greater. Recoil impulse might be more pleasant, though.

Because everyone knows faster is better 😂

Why not buy or borrow a chrono, people can tell you the likely velocity you may get not the actual velocity you will.

That said hunter will likely give you better velocity than the n140 as a double base ball powder but is suspect ramshot big game will be the best fit if speed is the ultimate are goal.

Have just looked at the data, n140 3730 fps, hunter and big game around 3980 fps. For 23/24” barrel, conventional wisdom is shorter barrel = using faster powder so big game it is, or stick with the hunter if you don’t want to splash out.

Or switch to a 75 gr v-max with better BC.

Makes perfect sense using it for wacking and stacking deer being more pointable, less to hit on branches and less movement when swinging it about.
16” 308 makes perfect sense, 16” 243 doesn’t make 1700 ft-lb without being well over pressure.

Is that not for a 23 inch barrel bud?

Probably mty shot in a tunnel in still air ! I don't worry about the length bud just work on the results and whats best 😉 but factory data is just a start of the process .
My own loads are nothing like there's but I'll try to start in the mid or nr max before I push the data to meet my or the rifles best performance.
Used to have a 16" M4 best results were way over book max ! But that worked for me with my rifle barrel
