Undergraduate Dissertation Survey - The Cost of Stalking in SCOTLAND

I am a student studying Global Agriculture and Food Security at the University of Edinburgh, and I am currently conducting research for my undergraduate dissertation, which is about the costs and income associated with wild venison production in Scotland. This topic is being conducted to analyse the overall costs associated with stalking, to assess if stalkers in Scotland are incurring a loss for the production of venison, and to explore the potential need for a venison subsidy.

I am therefore asking stalkers and deer managers located in Scotland to complete my survey covering these topics. This project has a short turnaround, so responses are needed as soon as possible, but no later than the 6th of April. All participants who complete the survey will be anonymous, and the survey will not collect any identifiable information.

Hi John,

My survey and the advertising post have had to be approved by Edinburgh University's Health, Ethics and Risk Committee, and this line about further questions and my university email address is a mandatory incision. However, I will happily answer all questions posed on this forum publically.

I currently do not plan on sending it to any Government Organisations. However, once my dissertation is finished, it will become publicly available to anyone who asks (who can then also share it themselves), and therefore it could become available to a (semi-) Government organisation.

As I dont live in Scotland the survey did not work for me. Nearly 40 years of stalking and guiding in Sutherland and having had some massive leases over the years, and still stalking areas that are large areas, there must be a number on SD that would have contributed.
Back up again this year with some overseas clients, the whole stalking scene is changing a great deal now. Wont be too long before it will have changed beyond recognition in y opinion.

Just to declare, nothing to do with the researcher.
Just to reinforce what @SjH has quoted:
Most research conducted in UK, obvious exceptions of course, will be made open data on completion and as such are available, sometimes for a fee, to anyone.
The openness of open data helps to ensure transparency and a higher standard of research that is open to scrutiny and use.
Whilst the research may not be going to any government/pseudo-government body there is nothing to stop those bodies accessing it at some stage.
Hope the dissertation goes well.

Bear in mind that most research is paid for by the government, via Research Councils.

So technically, all that is paid for by the government, goes to the government.

We (Victorian deer hunters) spent years feeding the various Gov dept`s with deer knowledge as 'we/hunters' were the only ones with the knowledge of where there strongholds were etc. and they basically utilised that knowledge for their own benefit including locking up more land for Parks. I dont trust Govs in these things.

Yes, but the survey asks if your in Scotland, I replied no, it then throws you off the site. Not well thought out really, if they think you have to live in jockestan.

Apologies, the first question has been amended to "Is your stalking based in Scotland".

I am happy for anyone who lives in England but stalks in Scotland to complete the survey, but you would need to report only on figures relevant to Scotland (If you stalk both Scotland and England).

Given the government are paying for this persons education- they are right to want access to any research IMO.
