Laptops, for you tech savvy folk

I need to replace my laptop. It's not a thing I use much, Quikload and occasional work documents, so it does need to be cutting edge in the processing stakes. But it would be nice if the battery life was decent.
Where's a good, trustworthy supplier, and is it worth looking at refurbished (my last was refurbished, sold by a reputable company, but was troublesome after the brief warranty).

Have you considered a Chromebook? The battery of these lasts a generation and you can charge most from a USB C phone charger. Not sure if quickload works on it. If its Windows, for me I usually go to eBay for an old business laptop with a decent spec and spend a little on a new genuine battery and charger which works better than the commercial ones. £200 should get you a decent one. Never bought any refurb one as I don't trust the short term warranty and/ or is way too much hassle when things go wrong.

IF you know your tech eBay or some of the refurb companies do a good deal but if you want it with warranty and support then the Dell Outlet is good.

Something like this Dell Inspiron with 15" screen, 13th Gen Intel processor, 16GB Ram, TB of fast storage is £480

I have used these people for refurbed workstations. They do a 1 year warranty on sub £1k laptops and 3 years on laptops over £1k but only 90 days on the battery. I'm not sure I'd buy a refurbed laptop to be honest as there is just so much to go wrong plus they can live quite a hard life in terms of getting moved about, dropped, stuff poured into them etc.

As your requirements are very minimal I'd probably look at an inexpensive Dell or similar with a warranty. I assume you actually need a laptop and one of these small PCs wouldn't do your job? There are a goodly number of relatively powerful "mini-PCs" available and something suitable for your task might come in around £150. This is the first one I saw and not a recommendation but just to give you some idea of what is out there:

Can recommend a Lenovo Thinkpad X1, you’ll pick up a refurb for about £3-500. Shop around you’ll probably get a new one close to the top end of that range as they are a volume IT department buy. Decent workhorse kinda thing.

E computers in perth. Great people to deal with, do refurbished equipment that won't break the bank with great service.

Thanks folks, appreciated.
Needs to run Quikload (I know it's not the be all & end all etc).
Laptop preferred just for mobility.

I’d only advise Windows 10 and above for any internet connected PC. Win7 has too many known vulnerabilities.

Have a look at Dell. Laptops start at around £400. UK based tech support. I pay £8.99 per month for premium support which gives me 24/7 phone phone support plus other stuff for my desktop which I have used a few times.

That is not good to read as i still use Windows 7. My laptop is about 12 years old! I am a Yorkshireman though and usually use things until they break. :)

There are hundreds of known and open vulnerabilities on Windows 7 with tools available to just download for anyone to use. I can’t advise you to upgrade enough. Keep updated people!

Hi.
So a windows 7 computer is still vulnerable even if up to date, quality - Norton - security is fitted?

I am a total technophobe. My phone is so basic, it does not even have a camera on it. It makes calls and sends texts, that is all i need.

Apologies to Malxwal for tagging onto his post.

For clarity, my laptop that is no longer functioning has a power issue. Unsure if it's battery or charger connection (inboard or outboard side) that's causing the problem. I figured it may be cheaper long run to just replace it. An older Lenovo ThinkPad running Windows 10.

These are brilliant reconditioned and great a

Yes, the OS is fundamentally compromised now. Fine if you’re not connecting it to the internet but otherwise I can’t recommend it. You should upgrade to at least Windows 10. If you don’t need a Windows PC or full desktop Microsoft Office a Chromebook is a very secure and simple solution. Just Google Windows 7 vulnerabilities, they are legion.
