Was out early with a friend to see if we could get a roe buck that we hoped would be rutting on the farm given some of the posts where they seem to have started.
Got to the farm early about 20-30mins before legal light to give plenty of time to get down to a good position to call from. Typically as we started walking a muntjac blocked our path and started barking as he ran up the field before stopping and just watching us. We waited and waited for him to leave so we could proceed but he wouldn't budge. Legal light came and we decided to see if we could call him over as at this point he was c.300y away with a tough angle to try and close the gap. He began to walk our way after some squeaks before dropping into the ditch and disappearing only to reappear back up at the top again .... annoying but he had stopped barking so we decided to proceed slowly to get by and head to the calling point.
As we got to the margin of the field in which to call we peered round the corner and typically a young roe doe bedded staring right at us but not budging...again we waited not wanting to spook her but hoping she would leave the space. She eventually got up and wandered off very relaxed and into the spinney on the edge of the farm, she must have startled a muntjac as about 1 minute into the spinney we hear a bark come out.
So we got into position
Proceeded to call but nothing moved/came over and the temps started to creep up. As we started to back track to check where we came from a muntjac was on a mission along the top edge and didn't show signs of stopping. He dipped into the hedge so getting low we moved across the field to close the gap.
He popped out again and then back in, closed some more distance and got to 80y down from around 250y.
Not wanting to push our luck I set up on the sticks hoping he would present. He didn't show signs of stopping so some squeak, a whistle and an oi to try and get him to stop. He wouldn't but he did start working towards us across the field. He didn't see us and turned just enough to present a broadside shot mid step. He dropped on the spot which was to be expected with the .308 and after a few minutes let Major off to go track as his reward for being patient.
Nice to get some meat in the fridge again and this is the first muntjac taken off this farm. After sorting the muntjac we decided to head to part of the farm thay hadn't been cut to see if anything was around but didn't find any other deer around
