informing the police of shooting activity

I live in an area which is on the edge of a green belt but also urban in places. Of all the places I go to shoot pigeons, I only feel the need to inform the police of my activities when I am in my own local area. On a number of occasions a complaint has been registered by someone and the police always come out to see me.
They have never admitted that they are aware that I have logged the activity.
They always say that they always attend if there is a notification from the public that there is "a man in a field with a gun".

I would be interested in your thoughts on the usefulness of continuing to inform the police of shooting activity as it doesn't appear to do the shooter any good, at least in my experience.

Get the e mail address of the HQ contact centre e mail them 24 hrs or less (they don't holding over incident requests over 24 hrs)when you are intending to go to a specific area and ask for a cad reference number by E mail only
Details to give
Specific
Times arriving and leaving
Vehicle reg
Names of Marksman

When leaving site - a quick e mail logging you've off site 👍

I know it may seem like another big brother is watching syndrome BUT

In the event you get a visit from mr fffffing know all shite face book village shitehead, show him the police cad 99% of the time they **** off and ****ed off because you've controlled everything, they dont like it up em, they are more than likely trespassing anyway

For the notifying the police, yeh its not the most glorifying place to be, but they know your there, and have to respond whether there is a cad in place or not, for them its a peace of mind for them to call you and pop over and find you for a chat and get to know you they and you will feel a lot better over it

Downside in some areas you could get a call from the wildlife crimes officer checking out the cad request, once you've spoken to them once that'll be it generally

Not everyone's choice of action, getting a CAD as a rule you won’t need one, in an area you feel you're being monitored or not wanted by some, it takes 5 minutes tops

None of the finest preparations to shoot will stop an accident, in that event, you will be arrested and investigated it means nothing but diddly squat in any defence just like any other

Slightly off kilter - couple of places i shoot for work or leisure due to not knowing who you will encounter i / we have now a body cam on as well from start to finish, sign of the times unfortunately, make sure you cover your own arse and not let other shite control the person with firearm, you will lose every time

I book in, online if I can, every time I go stalking with The Met or Essex Police.
It's in the terms of my contract, but I am happy to do it.
I have been told that even if I notify them they still need to attend if a member of the public calls, reporting an armed man. My hope is that they won't then attend in a heightened state, cocked and locked.
It's not happened yet, no thankfully. I am quite good at hiding 😉

This the difference between my area and the UK, In my state open carry is permitted and some do, never have I been visited by law enforcement for being seen with a firearm of any type. In the UK from my observation via this forum it seems the assumption is illegal activity if one is seen with a firearm. If for some odd reason I was being observed by the police while conducting lawful activity I would ask very pointed questions as to why they must observe me. Reality in my area is more likely the responding officer might be interested in what I am shooting and wish to try it out. And yes, I would allow that to most of our local officers, not all.

There's a few threads on this subject if you search back.

Really there's no one answer because it all depends on the circumstances. If there's little chance of someone calling the police because you are in a remote area, it's quite different than shooting in a field with a border on a housing estate. Some would argue that they are engaged in a legal activity and for that reason alone they would never call the cops. Some would argue they always do.

It's not true that (whatever they say) the police will always attend if there's a call. If you've told them and they have got their act together, they may well just 'phone you and verify that it is you. Depending on what the call says, of course.

In my previous life, I attended a rural Cumbrian village address because someone had called in about lights and shooting. The complainants turned out to be some young Asian girls on a weekend away from Manchester. And the shooting was a bit of normal fox control. But it's understandable. The girls from Manchester would only have knowledge of shootings in Manchester! All was fine after I explained. They even offered me a puff of some smoke coming from a pipe in a bubbling container. Perhaps that's normal in Manchester too.

Stop making a rod for your own back
Your doing nothing wrong so why the hell should you have to tell the police what your doing
If they turn out to every snowflake complaints that’s their problem not yours
They will come out anyway so don’t bother yourself or make your life more difficult, just get on with what your doing and screw the rest of the world , it’s none of their business.

We started phoning in when out lamping new areas and then phoning in to say we had finished,Stopped doing that when they were phoning back at 3 o’clock in the morning to say are you still out.

l never contact the police about my stalking activity because:

a) I don’t feel the need to inform them of any other of my lawful activities, either.

b) What we start by offering as a courtesy will soon become a local requirement, then an FAC condition, then a legal requirement.

c) Even if you do register your activity and get a CAD reference, the chances of an operator receiving a panicky call from a member of the public - “There’s a sniper in a field with a machine gun! He’s in a field off the little road between Tesco and my mum’s house!” - and being able to connect that to “I’ll be deer stalking on Grange Farm AB12 3CD between 0500 and 0800 today” are pretty remote, so officer/s are going to be tasked anyway.

stopped calling them years back, used to travel with a friend to a permission some 45minutes away, we used to start the call to 101 as we started driving, frequently we arrived on the permission before 101 had answered the phone and logged the CAD. They then asked us to call on leaving, what for another 30, 40 minute wait, no thanks.

So we soon stopped calling them.
