Roe sacks - Ogden v Monarch

Thinking of buying a roe sack - either Monarch or Ogden. Anyone got any advice?

Are there any significant differences between these two brands? I am hoping to be able to carry the sack closed (i.e. folded up) but with a bit of kit (knife, gambrel, gloves etc) in the side pockets. Don’t know how much I will be able to get away with while still being able to fold it up. Would be interested to hear about other people’s experience on this point.

I notice that the Ogden sack is slightly bigger but only has one clip to hold it all together when folded in on itself.

Should I be buying a sika sack on the bases that the bigger the sack the easier it will be to fit in a carcass or stick with something smaller but designed for the deer I will actually be carrying.

All and any advice would be gratefully received. Thanks in advance.

I’ve had a few different ones and I now have the Ogden’s Roe Sack that folds down into a bum bag, hand on heart it’s a cracking bit of kit. Space for all your gralloch bits and bobs etc and with it being around your waist (until needed of course) it doesn’t interfere with rifle sling, bino harness etc.
I’ve had two Roe in it to carry over rough ground a number of miles and its design with chest and waist straps etc is really good with decent weight distribution etc. honestly couldn’t recommend it enough!

agree

They are definitely the same bag as I had a conversation with Phil at last years show around a rifle slip for the hill, he told me get one from Monarch or him it makes no difference as he makes the slips and bags for Monarch.
I’ve got the waist band one which I use a lot and I’ve had the Napier one and prefer the Ogdens one, also have the Sika sack but tend to use the waist one more.

Thanks everyone. I hadn't even considered the belt version before posting but it sounds like the way to go. Does it include a detachable liner like the other versions?

Yes and the liner is much stronger than the Jack Pyke version - although the latter is good for what it costs but better for muntjac than a decent roebuck imho - you get what you pay for.

I have had an Ogden Sika sack for the past 18 months and it's excellent. Before that I had a Napier Roe sack which was a complete piece of junk. I spent as much time repairing it as I did stalking.

Quick update... I bought a compact roe sack from Ogden's - the one which fits into a bag worn on a belt around your waist. Phil at Ogden's could not have been more helpful.... And I couldn't be more please or impressed with this bit of kit. To be honest I'm already wondering how anyone manages without one. The side pouches are large enough to carry everything you could possibly need in the field and everything is extremely well made. The sack itself is really well designed with comfortable shoulder straps and a durable, detachable liner. It completely swallowed up this MJ shot last night and I could have easily fit a roe on top with room to spare. Extracting carcasses (and keeping them clean) from this particular permission has always been challenging as getting a sled in is next to impossible... Last night I simply strolled out with the deer on my back. Brilliant bit of kit. Amazing service from Phil. What's not to like?IMG20230828181814.webp

Agree, ive just acquired one and the concept and quality is top notch, took mine out for a run on the rabbits to give it a whirl the other night and it gobbled up 17 rabbits with loads of room to spare, the straps are in different positions to my previous military style rucksack and carrying them back to the van was a doddle. Hopefully there will be a couple of Munty’s in it tomorrow evening! IMG_1332.webp

Your fallow must be smaller than the ones we get round here! I’ve got an Ogdens roe sack, and there is now at the last few fallow would get in there!

Hi Jason

Definitely tthe same product.

Phil isn't a trade member on the forum, so to support the forum members we offer a very modest bit of discount (no point in us having a big difference in price-point) and we always chuck in an FOC Mora Companion knife on Roe & Sika Sack orders (when ordered by pm on the forum).

Regards

Rob

To throw a third option into the mix: I use and like the Napier Apex Predator roe sack.

I don't ever recall seeing an Ogden "in the flesh", but the illustrations on the Internet suggest that the Napier is smaller until required. It also comes with two interchangeable stud-in heavy-duty liners which can be swapped and cleaned easily.

I only take about 6-8 "handbag" deer per annum, but the Napier has lasted me for about 8 years so far with zero structural damage, and it carries all of my gubbins quite handily.

I think a letter to Santa this year might include the roe bumbag option - looks like a great piece of kit that keeps bulky stuff away from the rifle.

I have a more traditional sack which is great with 1-2 deer in it, but get a biggy or add a 3rd then it puts all the weight on your neck and that soon means your arms start to go a bit numb!!
