Asking for SSG69 owners out there for their opinion on this rifle?

Have an opportunity to acquire (I think) a late SSG69 with low round count. It’s minus the correct scope/rings/bipod. However I’m tempted to put a PMII on it so OEM Kahles not such a miss.

Any info on what they came with/basic issues/useful upgrades gratefully read.

Ty all.

Steyrs of that vintage were really nice rifles. I used a left handed civilian model M in 7x64 a few times. A beautiful rifle to use. The military version had a heavier barrel and a composite stock.

Only part that let them down was the plastic rotary magazine. The earlier Steyr Mannlicher had a beautiful one from solid steel. The Model M and SSG69 had a polymer one that had a reputation fir getting fragile with age. Forgotten Weapons has done a good video on them.

I used them extensively in the 90s. No real faults. The magazines need to be kept clean and dust free, if you can get the metal trigger guard do so, the stock did apparently become brittle but I never saw it. They can be re-barreled (Neil Mckillop) I may some scope mounts somewhere.

Bear in mind the British were still using the L42A1 and Enfield Envoy well into the late 1980’s when the first Accuracy Internationals started being adopted.

The SSG69 was adopted in 1969.

Scope mounts sounds interesting. Please revert if you find them? Ty 👍👍

The one I have my eye on is - I think - late production and low round count but lacks OEM scope and bipod. Any a/n list to identify year out there? Ty all

I have a SSG Sport in cal .243 and its great, however, over the years I have had to replace or get parts ( via Sportsman Gun Centre ) for both of my rotary magazines.
I got a genuine Steyr picatinny rail from SGC and it facilitates thermals and conventional optics via Contessa QD mounts

I have an SSG 69 in 7.62mm. lt loves GGG Imperial Match.

Mine came with a Nightforce NXS 3.5 - 15 X 50mm.

No problems with mags, stock or trigger guard.

Trivia point: It’s the world’s first purpose-built sniper rifle, i.e. designed with that role in mind “from the ground up.”

I have a spare set of the original rings (30mm) available if you are stuck and have a spare aluminium trigger guard/mag well ( a chap on here got them made, drstrangelove I think) that uses the original rotary mags, they seem to be working well so could be persuaded to part with the spare one.

You won't go wrong with a steyr ssg69, only problems is the trigger gaurd/magazine housing cracking up, but there are replacement options out there now, there are aluminium ones which use the original rotary magazine and there is one that takes the acis magazines. Apart from that they are bomb proof and extremely accurate and smoth. I like them that much I've got 4 of them😬
If you need a replacement trigger gaurd or any other bits give me a shout might be able to help.

Do any production numbers and s/n exist anywhere so as to identify when a rifle was made or, is there a year of manufacture on the rifle?

In my quest to drive you all mad:

Are there two barrel lengths? This rifle is in the green polymer

What’s the preferred bipod for them?

The serial number on mine begins 11, the 'date code' is just a number, 380.
I have the conversion allowing AI mags.
If someone can come up with a date when 30mm scope tubes became available, that might be a clue as to the date of manufacture.

I have the original QD rings(I don't think they are 30mm, though) and a 10-shot mag.
