Breaking pups in.

Its no secret that I am a great believer in taking pups out with the bitch (Dam) as soon as they can follow her for a bit. They learn, they learn, they learn even more from such an early age. Any old how I shot this stag one morning coming back from a dog trap run. He was downhill from me hiding behind a tree. Pups were in the Kubota back and I simply lifted the 7mm mag and smoked the poor ****. Pups didn't bat an eyelid to the boom as they say and I took them downhill to "their trophy" . Well after the gypsies bought a plot down the road wounded deer turned up all over the place and I imagine this stag was one of theirs. .I have never seen such a poor bastard like this ever. What did he go through to end up like this?

any obvious injury John ?? Poor bugger!
No not obvious and I didnt search but I suggest that it may have been a gut shot. Whatever it was a deer in a condition like that has obviously dropped a few hundred lbs and suffered a long time.

You wont listen,
BUT,
I’ve seen more pups break down due to physical problems caused because they were run too hard, too early without basic training than I have for any other reason.
Nice pups, treat them right and let them mature.

I have to say, I would not run pups that age too hard, they need to strengthen and mature a bit to save problems later, plus early training. Just my opinion of course, but I have worked dogs hard for nearly 50 years. 👍

Fu..k me, even a John thread has instantly turned into a bun fight... all this bickering must be a result of;

#1 Brexit
#2 the Russia x Ukrainia war
#3 China, China, and another dose of China...
#4 Sir Queer Starmer...

I will always remember when I took my yellow lab Sue to look for a couple of ducks we never picked off a flight pond the evening before.. I took a 12 week old black dog from Drakehead x Mirstan bloodlines, the bitch winded a duck the other side of the pond and slipped into the water and swam across... closely followed by Brandy the 12 week old pup... he was a natural at everything.

What on earth are you talking about? It isn’t a bun fight or bickering, its is just an opinion. Fu.k me, lighten up ffs.🤷

You could have found australias first case of CWD? I doubt a gut shot deer would have lived long enough to suffer that weight loss?

You could have found Australia's first case of CWD?
None here and if it was there would be a few 1000 more with it.

I remember a ripping and I mean ripping bitch of mine, born and bred on the farm that was raised under the same circumstances as outlined. Bitty was her name. I was hunting through heavy tussock with my dogs and she darted ahead on "something" solo...wtf is she doing I mused and followed her up to see her panting and then as I got closer I saw she had caught and disposed of a full mature dog fox with a good bit of age to him.....she was 10 months old and had been serving her apprenticeship with the pack since a pup.
Phaaark me after a lifetime of dogs I could tell tales for hours of effin great dogs and their exploits, whether they be rabbit, fox, roo, boar, cat or deer dogs.
I really wonder now what I have done wrong....oh yes I have started them too early lol.
Here`s a pic or two of my last bitch Berry @ 10 years-ish. A ruthless and I mean ruthless bitch especially on wild dogs, foxes and cats..could point quail with the best of them btw. Notice how fit she is? This is how a hunting dog will look like if it does half a dozen k`s every day doing what they love and that`s hunting. She`s no couch potato playing on a beach.
Note toenails, here is a pup that started riding the quad in a tub at 6-8 weeks, shes a bit older in this pic. They were taken as usual out to where the older dogs were working and learned and learned. Good blokes on here know what I`m waffling about.....lots dont.

The following is indicative of her hatred for wild dogs. A trapped bitch that I had head shot. Yet the same bitch was the most loving of all with the kids, grandkids and hell on strangers turning up at the door. Her litter brother was even better again.

Half a dozen Ks! **** me John, a working dog during the winter months here will cover dozens of miles four times a week, over very harsh ground, getting ripped to fcuk through thick cover, in all weather. Fit is not the word, my current dog, I only have one now, would do half a dozen Ks looking for somewhere to take a shite. I have no idea why you think your working dogs are any fitter than the machines you find here……They ain’t. There are plenty of fat, couch potatoes in Australia mate.

During the quieter periods, my dogs have always loved “playing on the beach” 🙄

But I was only expressing an opinion, and if it works for you, then good, and yes, your dogs look great, but no better than some of the machines you find working the ground here. There is good and bad everywhere mate.

Yeah yeah yeah...a hound on the sambar might do 30 k`s in the day, common for kelpie sheepdogs to do 30 k`s a day here a husky pulling a sled in the Iditarod ? Well look that one up lol.

Pics please,thank you.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, 30k, just 18 miles! 😳

This dog will do that before he takes his first shite John, on a good day working the dog I will do 12 miles, the best part of 20k these dogs when hunting will cover, at the very least, five times that, on hard terrain and through thick cover. A sheepdog working on the moor, fells or highlands here would easily cover 40 miles, not little Ks, but miles. What a Husky has to do with it I don’t know, but they will knock any animal on earth for stamina.

Horses for courses mate, these dogs are bird dogs, so no, he won’t drag down a deer, he is bred to hunt, flush and retrieve. Something he absolutely lives for.

But seeing as you asked nicely, here are some pics of my absolute machine, an English Springer Spaniel. He is my only dog now, and he loves the beach. 👍
