does it lose much velocity? Being only 16.5” looks a really nice little rifle for stalking.

It does lose velocity, as expected and your milage may vary depending on load being used. I came across this article here which gives some examples where they cut a barrel from 28” down to 16.5” in .308 Win. Velocity may be an issue with some loads for remaining deer legal in Scotland at 2450fps, however in England & Wales it should comfortably exceed the 1700 ftlb requirement.

And yes, they are indeed handy!

Rule of thumb is 25/30fps lost per inch barrel length or c.100 fps for a 4inch shortening soooo your little darlings once trundling along at say 2,700 fps will have no impact on deer in your proposed woodland areas, apart from the same loud thump and their wee legs buckling….
