Scottish Venison Day

Sorry. But three years of busting my ass trying to get Scottish venison to the adoring
public has clouded my view somewhat.

The industry may well be worth 70 million, but I bet it's mostly benefiting importers, supermarkets, and AGHEs

Just me being cynical, prob'ly 🧐

Shameful advertising and a shocking way to deal with a prime product of scotland Dick Playfair should be sacked for promoting venison in this way and BASC SGA and other orgs should hang there head in shame. We have an industry in crisis and this is the best they can come up with . Gov spending 10s of millions on deer and we get a tinny % of that to try and get the public to eat it. What a f IN SHAMBLE.S

The uptake last time was only £14k, be interesting to see if the full amount is utilised this time.

I’ve applied.
And 14 applicants. So a grand each. Better than nothing, but that's only going to offset a large investment by a tiny amount. I spent half of that on two used drinks chillers, and probably an additional 3 or 4 thousand on equipment and kitting out the larder.

As usual, lots of noise and fuss with bugger all substance behind it

Well my application is for more than a grand so will see. It would certainly help me out in my situation and enable me to shoot more Reds than currently.
I don't believe you would shoot more can you evidence base this as that's what will be required. Most people could shoot more not because of a larger fridge but because there is pour or no through flow. Hope you get what you want and telling white lies in the political arena is expected. Remember this is your money not there's. They just have control of your money.

I appreciate there are bigger issues but the OP was to share some of the updates that went out yesterday and I am not sure what is wrong with raising awareness of recipies for venison. Here are some recent recipies from Eat Game.

Sorry but I think your marketing may be way off the mark, who logs onto Eat game ? Most probably people who already eat game, looking at of the pictures from Scottish venison would not make me buy there product, butchers in tweeds ? A very wet roe and some very rare steaks, obviously aimed at a very small market. As I said burger fuel sell venison burgers, this is a main stream burger seller not a niche burger store, most of the customers would not know what a wapiti or venison is, or really care, but they buy them at a premium price due to quality of 1757100981101.webp

Conner you are not preaching to the converted here you are trying to encourage new members of the public to try venison and maybe put it on there plate. Putting pictures up of deer slung over Pony's back or deer torsos hanging in a shinny chill will not help. I don't see the farming sector showing the insides of an abattoir. Lets be real if we are to increase sales its in the industrialised areas and they are with out doubt sensitive to dead things. I don't need you recipes the general public do with out the need for the killing side lets keep that to our selves. Sadly DICK and CO cant seem to get away from the control side.

To be fair, the OP is just a few social media posts from various moorland groups and others on #ScottishVenisonDay which has been running a few years now - and its just one day on socials and some people will see an update on their socials about it for the first time and many won't. It is what it is.

The wider marketing of game in the UK is multi-faceted with many stakeholders and audiences. As regards the general public celebrity chefs in particular can and do help raise awareness as do supermarkets that stock game.

I wasn't aware of the NZ chain Burger Fuel doing wapiti burgers. Very interesting. The 'Bastard Burger' made me smile and I had a look at the Wild Heart' wapiti burger.

These seem to be the folk managing the collaboration:

They say "last year through this collaboration a total of $30,000 ($1 per burger sold) was raised, with this amount donated to the Fiordland Wapiti Foundation to enhance its predator control work in the Nitz Valley. 50 DC200 traps were funded and recently installed, with the direct benefactors our iconic native birds namely Kiwi, Kea, Whio, Weka and Kaka".

Also "Wapiti is free range, antibiotic free, gluten free, dairy free, beyond organic, and grown on some of New Zealand’s finest native vegetation".

The wapiti are harvested by hunters from the Fiordland Wapiti Foundation

From reading further it seems that lead ammunition is not used by hunters affiliated with the Fiordland Wapiti Foundation for shooting wapiti or other species for environmental reasons - especially the impact on kea.

A fascinating story from field to fork. Thanks for sharing and I may write an article on this.
