Why would you?

I really don’t like commercial shoots, I’ve been on ( worked on ) many and some of the things that happen on them don’t sit well with me, I’ve had people telling me how much they do for the environment, and no doubt they do some good work but their primary focus is to make a lot of money and not having an outlet for birds is a big problem, who’s going to pay to get rid of birds when there’s no value in them, I have a small shoot and we aim for 40/50 bird days and we sometimes struggle to get rid off all the birds at the end of the day, luckily we have a member who put anything that’s left on “ give up the game” for anyone to take it for free, the end of game shooting will be the game shooters own fault, if you want to kill it you should show it the respect it deserves and use it

I love shooting but I can tell you I absolutely don’t like huge shoots just to see all the shot birds binned. A large estate near me with royal connections has huge shoots, the bin lorry arrived at mine to collect my commercial bin. When I looked in the lorry the rear was full to overflowing with whole pheasants having just been to the estate. What an absolute disgrace to shoot and waste like that it’s deplorable and I get how people then want it banned and quite frankly behaviour like that it bloody should be.

Absolutely

Mate was on a partridge shoot in DnG two weeks ago the 8 guns shot 181 birds. Only two of the guns wanted any birds , he brought home 20 to breast out. The remaining birds were going in a skip. As Benbouy says we are our own worst enemies at times. Pay for a good quality high clay bird sporting day instead or have an outlet already Td up for any surplus birds. These shoots are just profiteering from our sport and giving the antis ammunition.

Shoots like this - in my opinion should be ostracized - cast out from our community
Organisation like NGO - BASC - CA should not insure them

As said it just gives the other side more to shout about and more weaponised social media content... it's a lot worse when "we" actually are in the wrong 😞

Shooting something purely to say you did, and throwing it in the bin whole, is a separate issue but it's clearly poor form... pretty gross really.

I spoke to a fella, other day on about a local large shoot.
Game dealers are back to charging 50p to take the game away!!
Then have the cheek to charge the same shoot 6 quid if they want oven readys back.

Look i realise they have overheads etc, but was only 10 or 15 yr ago they actually had to buy the birds.
Yet buy a bird oven ready and theyre as dear as theyve ever been.
Its no wonder their is no market for the the orice they charge.
Almost everything my local game dealer took before Brexit was exported. It's complicated now.

Aye but charging so much for an over ready bird is not helping to grow a uk market.

Who here woukd pay the price of an oven ready bird?
How much would you charge for an oven ready bird if you were a butcher, paying for premises, tax, business rates, etc.
Let's say the owner of the butcher is paying staff to prep it, there won't be much profit in it, that's why a lot of tye time birds are just breasted.

People also forget that we have because used to dirt cheap food, oven ready chickens for the price of 2 cups coffee?
Look at the price of slow grown well fed chickens, not shed reared rubbish. Then a pheasant looks s more reasonably priced dinner

How about a rule that shoots have to provide shot quarry as food - even if it’s just for wholesale and ends up as pet food? Discarding shot birds like garbage is just wrong - like when sand eels were used as fertiliser. I gave up pheasant shooting as it makes no sense to me on a sporting or environmental grounds - it’s not either, and I have better solutions for both. I wouldn’t ban it - just make it work better.

I knew a game dealer that was in talks with a petfood company, as soon a lead shot was mentioned they lost interest, not worth the possible bad publicity.

Our game shoot has certainly improved our environment hundreds of times over

Good to hear - it should be a requirement before a shoot is permitted. How can you best evidence an improvement has taken place? Wild bird count or similar?

Yes we have had various surveys done over the years - and it was classed as nature deprived in many areas by the local wildlife trust
They now have asked if it can go as a local wildlife site

It was a block of mainly improved grass land and commercial forestry

Schoffel did a video highlighting some of our work - and at the risk of being (very) boring and putting it up (again) i will as im very proud of the work and believe all shoots doing good should highlight them

That’s how it should be done vs others who just do it for the money

Im not going to post all the others up - but there is some great work highlighted on some others shoots all available to view - and i think worth viewing - On Schoffelcountry - you tube page

My brother inlaw did a few months att a large shoot in yorkshire, 23,000 birds in one pen, birds with bulgy eye wandering about, 120 shoot days a year, refilling partridge pens at night ready for drive the next day, massive incinerator onsite. One under keeper said they thought he was an under cover anti, sadly he wasnt.
Shoits like this will be the next nail
