airgun ban in scotland within months

we caught two blokes in our pheasant pen last year, they claimed they were after rats, the police let them go,
dispite being half a mile over the boundary, and us finding a few dead pheasants but not on them.

licencing would tighten up on them.
dont forget until afew years ago anyone could just go out and buy a shotgun, the mail order catalogues would save you having to buy one face to face.
we understand how shotgun licencing was a good thing.

As others have stated, it would be a crying shame if they were to be a "ban" on airguns in Scotland.

Yes there is an element who will always ruin it for others but i fear it's just another step to alienate shooting sports.

Only today I had my boys out practising with their guns, oldest boy was using our old air rifle for target practice (obviously supervised)

and my youngest had a very low powered plastic BB gun to use

To me, starting them early leads to responsible handling and having respect for whatever weapon is in hand, not to mention the fun of being outdoors and having a ball.

It would be a real shame to deny the shooters of the future from starting off on the right foot and not having memories like these below to look back upon.

Some sort of control is needed for the purchase of a new one but how do you legislate for the tens of thousands of legally held air weapons that are out there now with no record of ownership or purchase ?

i would go along with that , why would anyone want one ? what use are they ?

Ever heard of target practice????????????

You know, the skill of placing that bolt or arrow accurately on the target at the range of your choice????????

Next you are going to say you have never heard of approved archery clubs with their very own crossbow section ?????????

Talk about all shooters sticking together for the good of ALL shooting sports:mad:

I'm alright jack - as long as they leave my centre fire rifles alone all the other shooting sports can be banned as long as I care....................... Have we learned anything since the two Marches in London???????

Absolutely! Criminal use of shotguns disappeared within minutes of the 1968 Firearms Act being passed, and is today completly unheard of.

Rigboot,

Nice pics and its obviously the way it should be done.

Nice pics and your lads are obviously enjoying themselves in a safe enviroment.
Unfortunately, we have hordes of feral kids whose parents don't give a toss and instead of hitting paper targets, its the neighbours cat or pigeons off the rone pipe thats getting shot at.

I, like many started off with an airgun and I am now of the opinion that a tightening up on ownership of airguns is needed due to the sheer numbers of incidents involving them causing "problems"[

The one good thing will be that our friends south of the Border will be able to pick up some real bargains!

Indeedy!

That's how they stopped hand-gun crime too. This, banning things is such a winner.

And... it just sickens me how one can hardly pick-up a newspaper these days without reading about some ned holding up a liquor store with a javelin.

When-oh-when will they see that a ban on javelins would finally bring all violent crime to an end?

I genuinely cannot see how they would enforce it, they talk of treating unregistered/unlicensed airguns as a firearms offence & it would carry a 5 year custodial sentence just as any other firearm would.

They would have all the prisons filled within a week or so of the ban!!!

Some interesting opinions here,
I am quite fascinated by the I`m all right jack attitude shown by some, ,distain of other shooting sports etc, It is people like this that cause us now to have no competitive pistol sports in the UK.

I imagine they are all the same types that supported the hunting ban, "to get them nasty hare coursers" but would deny it cause they like to be seen supporting the mounted hunts. Joke.

Disgusting.

i am all for a register.
given how powerful air rifles can be and how easily they can be tweaked to be even more powerful, I find it weird that you cant buy a hammer in a tool shop without putting it in a bag to take out to the car but anyone of age can buy an air rifle without even a ID being shown.

having seen first hand what an air rifle in the wrong hands can do and the ensuing debarkle surrounding the investigation into who was responsible. as simple register would have solved that in seconds.

Who says you can,t Buy a hammer without putting it in a paper bag. Anyone of a legal age can buy a air rifle yes, the same as anyone with money can buy a car regardless of age, how would a register help decide who was In the wrong, we have thousands of handguns not registered, there would be a lot more air rifles. Crossbows should be banned along with swords, knives bow and arrows, sharp sticks, stones tiddlewinks and bugger the people who use them legally. I don,t do those sports .

Not true. There is a simple register of name and address when you buy an airgun from a legitimate dealer thanks to the Violent Crime reduction Bill. Problem is that as soon as I am out of the shop, I am free to sell my newly aquired gun to whatever Ned comes walking along and that too is totally legal as long as he is 18 or over and not banned under the firearms act from owning an airgun.

This is the problem - Knee jerk legislation that doesn't work . Politicians playing to the gallery and making non-enforcable laws that waste police time and lead to next to no convictions.

Isnt it about time that all shooters in the UK, regardless of what they shoot stick together istead of trying to sell each other down the river.

If I shot .30-06 calibre, there would be uproar on here if I stated the opinion that .22-250 ammo should be taxed extra ........... But its OK because I shoot .30-06:D

WE are all shooters, and it shouldnt matter whether we shoot a crossbow, airgun, deer rifle or catapult, as long as we are within the law and legitimate we SHOULD have the support and brotherhood of all shooters in the country. - Thats how it happens in america, why not here.

Lakey;364419 WE are all shooters said:
its not the ones within the law that we have to worry about.
We "the shooters" are all tarnished with the same brush every time some nutter in cumbria goes on a spraying spree.

Everytime a kid gets shot in the park by some Ned the threat of bans comes ever closer.

the is no register in the UK of any impact. it is exactly the thing you just described, MP pandering to the gallery. useless, enforceable and doesnt take into account any private sales. no tracking whatsoever.
