DEER IN GENERAL or THEIR ANTLERS .

She's not a picture of good health, good luck with that.

Thanks. She is coming on slowly.

May i ask the circumstances that brought her to you? Glad to see she in on the up!

Sure. She was born about a week premature to one of my hinds. The worst hind I have got actually. Its my mistake really. Should have culled her last year but I was trying to give her some time. I watched her (the calf) for quite a while. She could not stand to feed and the hind had no bag. Figured that it could have killed both trying to bring her up. As it happens the calf still (a week later) cannot walk properly and would certainly have been a meal by now.

G'day Howa 243
She is looking good.
I've got one bottle reared red hind, shes a bit of a pest though.lol
Be good to see how this one fits in with the rest when she grows.I keep "Chelsie" by herself now,she dosent keep condition with her own kind.

Hope your stag got his slippers sorted.
Heres a brag shot of one of my young bucks,I wont post my reds as we cant compete with your "English" stags heads on our thin soil down here.lol

Hi mate, how are you?

I do know what you mean, they can be a bit 'attentive'. This one sleeps in at night and hugs the aga, but is out during the day. Am not sure how long to wait till I put her out with the rest. She is very small and I would be gutted to lose her now.

Your buck is a handsome chap. Very impressive. How old would he be?

G'day Howa243.
Things are going OK, almost forgotten the last drought, well not really, but I guess its a good sign when you can start to talk about it.
I'm still consummed by all things deer & I realise that if I haven't gotten over them after forty plus years of involvement I'm never going too.lol

I'm still wondering if your vet went with straight xylazine on that red instead of an opiate or anasthetic?

On your young hind, my own thoughts would be to keep her with limited/protected contact with the old hind or matriarch in your mob till she's a couple of years, or better yet rescue another one for a companion for her.I've bred mine & her calf is in fawn herself now,but she wont have anything to do with poor Chelsie since she entered the heirachy herself.Just watch plastic bags as thats how most "hand reared" deer seem to meet their doom.

The young blackbuck is three. The big boys were in rut & he'd been pushed well away from the action. He'd set up a "lek" with his half brother only 80 yards away doing the same,I'm pretty sure they missed out on any romance though.
Blackbuck have failed to thrive in Aust, I guess its the hemmoraghic viruses that sheep carry which is responsable.I keep this mob a couple of klm's inside my place but insects/vectors can & do still get blown in from the neigbours maggot taxis in bad weather.

Looking forward to more photos of your wee mate.Is she going to get a name?

Cheers Sharkey

Well this is her on her first day..and her name is Bella.

I didnt progress the darting issue for one reason or another but will come back to it again in the near future.

Do the bucks fight with the red stags?

Do you have handling facilities for your deer. If so do you mind me asking where you got the design/equipment from.

G'day Howa243

I run most of my species in seperate enclosures, this is mainly due to management considerations or hybridisation as with the two species of fallow, the moluccans, javans & sambar.Chital can/will even breed with rusa as will reds. For the most part different species ignore or get along with each other.I often run mixed bachelour herds & fights are usually intraspecific reather than inter.

I prefer not to dart deer yet its impossable to do what I do without this ability.
I'm building some new yards currently. They are all steel (fire & termites) & two storey with accomodation (kitchen ,shower toilets) on the top level for vets, biologists ,students etc, this is above the dark "forcing" section. There is also a viewing platform into the breaking down pens & into the lab/work/crush area.I've designed these myself,& have incorperated some "protected contact",because sambar can become dangerous in the yards (much nastier than pure elk).My design is to be able to work hog deer(45kg) to elk (500kg) through this system without help. There is no central draughting circle,a 1.5m wide laneway is used instead.Gates open inwards & outwards off this lane, which can also be used as smaller pens.

There is four outside breaking down/holding yards off the lane system which comes from three different directions.I also vary my lane widths depending on how fast I want the deer to travel through that section, narrow (3-5m)is fast, wide (20-40m)is slow.

I have installed a solid steel drop floor crush which was custom made in the eighties. It's not the best for velveting, but its fast for large numbers when it comes to the routine things like drenching, tagging, etc. Also good for AI'ing the larger species.Velveting of reds will be done in the smaller rooms using tranquilisers (straight xylazine in this case), & a "ring block" of local.Hydraulic crushes can be picked up for the price of fuel now,but they are slow & velveting isn't my main concern,so the drop floor was used.

This sheds working section is about 3/4 completed to a usable stage, the vet accomodaiton isn't the top of my list, but it is important for my objectives.(I "still" have about 60klms of deer fence to install just to get the farm finished,"hobby farm???")

I may post some photo's but as I was just informed by our "American friends" the "deer crush/handler" is a Nth American design.ROTFL.
No doubt as soon as I post something different in handling design for deer or antelope several businesses will claim it.

"Bella" is a great name.

Cheers Sharkey
