6.5 x 47 lapua users - hunting specific

You won't see any benefit with a tight neck in a hunting rifle at normal stalking distances. The 6.5x47 works very well with standard or even .292 no-turn necks. The CCI 450 small rifle magnum primer is the one to use.
thats a matter of opinion,Ive seen flyers be eliminated by turning brass due to the inconsistant neck thickness .depends on the level of accuracy one is looking for I suspose.
a mate uses a 6.5x47 never heard if the magnum primer trick, will pass on the info

Having built, and load developed a lot of 6.5x47s i can tell you that without neck turning the rifle will still consistently shoot 3-5 shot groups under .3 of an inch if correctly put together.

Iam not disputing that mate, just saying neck turning "can" and "does" reduces accuracy problems some calibers more than others as well as some makes of brass more than others.
I feel if your going to have the ultimate precission rifle built by a rifle smith who takes the time to put it togeather correctly why not try to squeeze the very best from the remeining factor which is the ammo used.you wouldnt buy a Lambo and run it on remoulds.
as i said though its up to the individual,I like neck turning hence why my rifles are tight necked they work well for me.

This is a stalking site, not a benchrest forum. The theoretical rifle in question is going to be used between 20-300yds for 98% of the time. The 6.5x47 is a great little cartridge that is easy to load for, and i would imagine that once initial load development is done, the intention is to get out and USE it, not just sit around all day cracking one off over 6mmbr.com. In this specific situation, with this rifle/calibre a tight neck chamber is not a good idea, and will result in very little benefit to the shooter.

ive used br4's, 450 mags and 400's - not noticed any difference in accuracy

i didnt choose to neck turn, thought there was more chance of me making things worse, but on my 2nd 100 brass before i used them i ran a 6.5 expander through them, then neck sized them with my wislon die and bush - it made the initial seating a lot easier and more consistent. i found the first time i was using the brass it was very hard/tight to seat the bullets, left a ring imprint on them.

stalking or BR isnt the object the same "to place a bullet into a certain place"
I dont know what your getting all up tight for,its only my opinion through my experiences plus reading what actual experts have written on the subject.

Exactly how much deer stalking do you do?

I think I will avoid the tight neck and go with the standard. Its more stuff for me to muck up while reloading!

Thanks for the info chaps!

No I asked you if you do more target shooting than deer stalking? I never mentioned any thing about shooting comps.

So.

Would you say you are more target focused or deer stalking?
isnt a deer,fox rabbit,crow,boar,antelope a "target"
it seems you don t do a deal of "stalking" going by what it ststes in your profile "Nice comfy high seat waiting on the fallow"

" elementary my dear Watson" Brilliant!!!!
You got me in one!

But please answer the question.
Is your shooting more target based?
Or.
Do you spend more time on the range"testing" than you do stalking?
Simple example of how to answer the question is.
" I spend most of my shooting time testing" or " most of my shooting time is spent managing deer"
give it a try.

The above question is not a trick one. There's no wrong answers.
Go on give us all a clue!

I don't want to be rude, but who cares?
A no turn neck is a sensible choice, especially in 6.5x47 with only Lapua as a source of brass. Yes, neck turning can be a good reloading practice for competition accuracy, or after a number of firings as the brass gets work hardened, but most of us won't need to in order to achieve excellent accuracy. If you already neck turn for other calibres or want to take your reloading to another level because you enjoy it, then go for it.

In practicle terms the meat damage is acceptable at that velocity on all species. For some reason that bullet/speed combo seems to drop most of them on the spot. I have shot Red stags and hinds, Sika, Roe and Muntjac with it. Nothing has moved more than a couple of paces before going down.

surely not!?
everyone knows that deer ALWAYS run when shot......

sorry. couldn't help myself.....:coat:

dont worry yourself about what I do,just make sure your comfy in your high seat or is it s high chair like young children use as your acting like one.
as I have already said everything you raise a rifle to is a "target" go look up what target means, this may help you.
the thing that is concerning me a little is that you keep following me around this site like a bad smell, now there could be a couple of reason for this 1. you would like to get to know be better and take warm showers with me or 2. your a troll with nothing better to do than to try and be a clever dick.
come back to me when you have more than 18 months experience under your belt, you may post something then worth replying too

quick to get defencive!
We do seem to knock heads quite a bit. On two threads that is. This one and the varget in .243 thread.
I seam to remember asking you a direct question there and you got all uptight then too.
Why are you so threatened by such simple questions?
You clearly have much more theoretical knowlage than my self. So why not just answer? I may learn something! As I have so little experience!
