Bloody Back

I have managed to slip 2 disks in my back and totally f**ked it so I have spent the past week in the prone position.
Used my time productively with some mammoth SD sessions (and some other random field sports sites AusHunt is worth a read (some pretty cool hunting goes on down under) and the infighting of the terrier and lurcher lads on the hunting life is entertaining) and read Richard Prior's Roe Deer and Duff Hart-Davies amongst the deer cover to cover twice.
Looks like I am going to be stuck like this for a while longer so if any one has any suggestions of good stalking related books that are readily available or any other sites where I can pass some time suggestion would be appreciated.
Just hoping that i am fit enough for the rut starting (and baby is due end of july but priorities!).
Cheers
Paul

Would suggest go to an osteopath, rather than physio. That's my experience, anyway. Physio messed around for months, with weekly sessions. Worked in the end, but a long slog. Now, any probs I go to osteopath, and he puts me straight in one or two sessions.

I wouldn't let either and osteopath or a physio touch me (that's now, I learnt the hard, expensive way). A good physio will give you exersises to do which will relieve and help.
The best bet is to take anti inflammitories and hope the prolapse 'slips' back in. Look on back related medical websites for best info and beware of the clicking and crunching brigade!

I know how you feel, I have been off work for nearly a month now with a prolapsed disk (same as a slipped disk according to my physiotherapist) its bloody horrible having to get the wife to dress you mornings! Luckily my place of work pay for me to go to a very good private Physiotherapist and she has helped, got another appointment on Monday. I am going back to work next Wednesday and hopefully it will be ok but its still giving me a little bit of stick at times. You cant do a thing about it and it gets you down being stuck at home all the time! Daytime TV is worse than the pain!! I hope you feel better soon.

Had it on and off for a lot of years and not a big fan of oestopaths as one made it worse a few years back, physio has always been a help in the past but isn't touching it at the min, but the drugs are helping and I am waiting to see a consultant about whiping them out.

To many years of big bergans and tabbing about while ignoring your body does not do wonders for backs or knees, feel knacked and am only 35!
Refusing to let Day time TV pollute my eyes RPA, hence my request for recomedations of good books etc.

Looking foward to theScudds DVDs - what a top bloke!
And hope it all goes well next week for yor back RPA and I am not far behind you.

When you are getting fit again get one of those inflatable gym balls, my physio recommended this as I recovered from a back injury. If I have even the slightest hint of pain or stiffness in the back doing around 2 minutes worth of exercises soon eases it. The anti-inflammatories are really good at getting you mobile again if they work for you. atb Tim

I had to stop taking the Naproxen Anti inflammitories as they were upsetting my stomach (possible ulcer) but kept on with the solpadol and the diazepam and they just made me sleep for hours! The most painful thing for me is sitting, how about you? My biggest problem is that I do 12 hour shift work as a Fork Lift Truck driver which is lovely when that is the worst position for me! I am like you I have suffered for years lifting silly things in the wrong manner such as big Armoured cables (previous job) and heaving bloody great Red deer around, all at the wrong height and in the wrong way!

hi have you had a Consultant in Pain Medicine and it is your right to do so ,i have 4 vert's that are stuffed to the point that thay were gonner cage them (f**k that), so i went to see the pain doctor who basicly killed the nerves in my Facet joints and a neve block at v12 before that after a lifting work injury i was left flat on the floor for weeks after every other gitt trying to bend and stretch me , i could not pick up a kettel or walk up the stairs, but now after three small opps i can do more but still some pain as two verts are split corner to corner but manageable with help with some tabs but none as strong as before i see you use diazepam please make sure your doctor has this in big letters as for back injury use only as it is also used for anxiety-relieving mental problems !if you see my meaning not saying you have but just be awear .i do hope you get sorted as there is no pain like it .:tiphat:

Part of the reason I left the building trade was through bad back and sore left shoulder. Years of hand digging sthil saws and chain saws. Even stupidly moving those concrete block aand beam floors.
I then moved into piano restoration left their through tennis elbows.
My uncle suffers from bad back and spent siply money trying to sort it out when his X Mrs said try yoga. He reckons it's best it's been in years. It took nearly eight months to notice a difference and is also back swimming.

feel for you fella. same problem many years ago, told i had a slipped disc, months and months of pills phyisio and rest. eventually gave me a mri scan and two disc's were ruptured. (no wonder nothing worked) was only 24 at the time, 40 now and still plodding on. disc's were removed and vertebra fused. pain was unbelievable.
work can be tough as im a brickie but it's what i do.try to keep myself fit and active, sitting about gets painfull and a lay-in never happens. i would suggest keeping them stomach mussles strong as this helps take the strain off your back.
hope things work out for you and its not to serious.
atb dale.;)

Thanks for all the advice and "get wells" and a massive thanks to Smullery and the the Scudd for the books and DVDs that they are loaning me - top blokes. Just goes to show what a great forum this is.
Cheers

this site is great for deer stalking related advice, less so for medical advice although all advice given with the best of intentions.

Regarding the books/vids I would get the nordik roe vid and call and get practice in for the rut. Drove my wife bonkers last year but called a few bucks so a price worth paying.

Good luck with the back

Don't worry mate, it's not as bad as newborn baby screaming that erodes your soul and sanity....... but that's on the way too!

save the trammies...

Ahead of you there Pete, the buttolo is on its way.

Just over 3 weeks to go Paul at this rate it will be me on the gas and air not Mary.

Get a selection of calls. watching a buck last year, no reaction to buttolo but came in like train to nordic. Mate had a buck no reaction to buttolo came in like a train to cherry wood. I have called a few with buttolo but its not the ultimate call by any means. i called 5 munties last week with a fox call, next week will try the same and no doubt get no reaction.

I would go for the yoga route for this sort of thing. I have been doing it for 8 years and have now no back pain. You have to work at it though. I reckon there should even be yoga for shooters as some of the techniques and ideas do help when shooting, core muscles and breathing etc.

Hi Bart, Have a look at 'Maneaters of Kumaon' on the internet, on PDF download. That will make your hair stand on end. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
