We got our Damage Control Permits on the Peach and Apple orchard friday and we made our first trip today !

My Thermacell !

My cooler !

Fresh cantelope !

My circa 2001 Marlin 444 shooting the Mount Sourdoughs 433-425GC Huckleberry !

And last but not least the nut that goes on the stock !

Well we didn't get any bear this trip or even see any . But I will say I saw a fair amount of sign that they'd been thru !

I saw a decent sized black bear today in the Big Horn Mountains in northern Wyoming. I was going down a rocky trail on my motorcycle and I looked across a meadow and there it was. I don't run across many at this altitude. They usually like to forage lower.~Muir

my father in law own blueberry plantations in Eastern Canada and they have had an unprecedented level of black bear this year

Well 6pt, a bad day in the woods > any day in the office. Is cantalope a good bear attractant or just a tasty snack?

(Edit: Clearly it ain't a great bear attractant as you didn't see any!)

Well one never knows !

But as long as I have a fork the cantelope doesn't stay around long enough to find out if it's an attractant or not !

Hi 6 point.
Just how dangerous are the Bears? Are you always on your guard when you are out say Deer Hunting or will they generally keep away from you?

Yorkie.

As a "general rule" North American Black Bear are more scared of humans then humans are of them .

My idiot friend sits beside a peach tree and hangs a scent candle in a tree within 20 yards of him and goes to sleep !
Now I'm not going that far !!!!

The first bear I killed was at 9 1/2 yards and I brained him .

My friends killed 6 or 7 since we started doing this and his are never more then 15 yards away !

I killed one two years ago that was a lasered 75 yards and at the time the distance for that one was greater then al he had killed added together .

Now the dangerouse thing can change obviousely if it's a sow with cubs and you get between them . But generally the black bear I've been around in Virginia and Pennsylvania have been quite scared of humans . There are also bear in the National Park thats not to far from where we hunt that get used to humans and pay us no mind . Incidently most of the bear we've killed migrated down out of the park to hit this orchard and an adjacent vineyard .

Grizzly bears on the other hand, aren't afraid of anything and you need to be very careful of crossing their path or temperament. In Montana a forensic board investigates every "self defense" shooting of a grizzly bear. To shoot one without justification brings a $25,000 fine. I hate the ba$tards. A buddy had one park on his freshly dressed and tagged cow elk. The bear ate, he got squat, including sympathy from Game Fish and Parks Department.~Muir

Grizzlies taking kills have always been a problem in Alberta. Fortunately you will be issued a replacement tag. Funny enough this happened to a friend of the family about 20 yrs ago near the Willmore wilderness reserve. When he went to the local Fish & Wildlife office to report the incident and get another tag, he was expecting to have to take the officer to the kill site to prove the grizz had taken his elk ( standard procedure ) The officer, an older and very experienced out-doorsman, asked him " how big was this bear". Wally replied " hes god-damned huge!!!!! and he was pretty ****ed off when he saw me". After a long pause the fish cop replied " I'll take your word for it " and gave him a new tag. With age comes wisdom lol.

That piece or wood and the forend came from a place called "Macon Gunstocks" as a semi finished 98% inletted stock forend set . They cost me about $250 and then my gunsmith buddy did the inletting and his brother did the shaping and finishing . I also added a steel grip cap from Brownell's .

So no that isn't factory . The stock that came on the rifle actually has a fair amount of figure . I got this because I wanted a monte carlo like my other 444's and some decent figure in the wood itself .

Here's the rifle before I had it restocked .

Here's the same rifle after restocking .
