RSPB persuade M&S to take grouse off shelves

BBC reporting that, due to illegal grouse shoots, M&S cannot verify its source of grouse and so will no longer be offering grouse on its shelves. Persuaded by letter from ex RSPB's Mark Avery [edited] says M&S would otherwise be condoning criminal activity.

BBC News - Marks and Spencer takes grouse off the shelves

Here's the link to ex RSPB Mark Avery's letter A grouse with MS | Mark Avery

The letter just reeks of intimidation rather than information.

Really poor show when writing such a letter to rely solely on emotive language and sweeping accusatory claims that you either can't or won't (I suspect I know which!) expand on. Wouldn't even get published on Wikipedia with that level of unsubstantiated "information" being touted.

What exactly is an ILLEGAL grouse shoot ?????
An illegal grouse shoot is when you use more than one terrier at a time to bolt them from their earths, stun them with a high powered lamp, then shoot them with a rifle smaller than a .243, on land deemed unsuitable by the chief officer of police, where you don't have the permission of the landowner, on Christmas day.
although I think you can use a .223 in Scotland. I hope that makes sense.

You do need a tough terrier to shift them ;) lol

Good job m&s ,now people might go to there local butchers to bye ,hopefully they Will stop selling all meats.

i think this is just a knee jerk reaction by m/s takeing them off the shelves,if it had been chicken drummers they would have told him to f+++ right off,how many grouse do they sell in a year christ they probably spend more on trollys,

RSPB are far too powerful for a charity this is just another instance of applying pressure to suit there own agenda, how about they publish the report into what poisoned the kites and buzzards in black isle if they were illegally poisoned they have nothing to hide. I suggest we all go to m&s and ask for oven ready grouse

To be fair, what else would you expect them to do? You could say exactly the same about most of the shooting organisations, as we pay our subs for them to fight out corner.

Whether you call it lobbying, advocacy or spin, it's a big part of why these organisations exist.

Maybe a boycott of M&S by everyone with a connection to shooting sports would have a bigger hit on their profits than Mark Averys weekly shop. Seen as a great victory for the anti's but in reality they've stopped selling grouse in 2 stores in upmarket London, I doubt they would have taken off UK wide. What is the point of people like Mark Avery? people who like to 'stir things up' spend their time writing 'blogs', starting e petitions, when has anything like that made a difference to wildlife? RSPB given £370,000 to save the hen harrier I'd love to know what their spending that on, I'd bet what they do won't make a blind bit of difference. They know the hen harrier is on the way out and grouse shooting is an easy target because we live in a country dominated by city people who are spoon fed an anti - shooting message by the likes of the bbc. The people who support a ban on driven grouse shooting are wrong to think it's to save wildlife. It's a class issue hidden by claims of habitat and water quality degradation, look at the fox hunting ban it's done nothing for fox welfare if you read some posts on here, all about banning toffs on horseback, grouse shooting is just the next on the list. Just wait for the attack on deerstalking, amateur stalkers totting rifles in the countryside to shoot bambi! People like Mark Avery will get bored when they've banned grouse shooting, just listen to his blogs, the sight of fluffy lapwing chicks was wonderful until he found out 400 stoats had to die to achieve that, if you can't or won't understand that then theres no hope of educating people to the benefit of gamekeeping to the environment.

It is up to M&S to decide what they sell, the obvious result of this is that people wanting to buy Grouse will do their food shopping elsewhere.

This is already a big problem for M&S in a very competitive retail environment, I can't see game dealers having a problem selling Grouse though.

Pretty much my thoughts on the subject

It was not a letter from the RSPB.

Mark Avery is ex RSPB and a campaigning blogger.

Apologies - quite right. Can't edit thread header though. Point is the nature of the letter and lack of information in it yet the result apparently achieved.
