Should the UK have public land for stalking?

I have been involved in the regulations for hunting game species on public land in Victoria through hunting organisations. This got me thinking about the UK.

Should the UK have public land for deer stalking? If so what is holding this back from being law. If not, why not?

Would still need regulation and rationing. Would it be for deer management or recreational stalking?

Effectively we have this already with Forestry Commission and their "regulatory" regime.

Up to you. Could be both. Could be for deer/foxes/minks whatever. Could be with game licences, bag limits, online booking, whatever.

And our stupid laws. Apparently you cannot sign your rights away over here, even if you sign a disclaimer you can still claim. This is what's messed up such as motor sport, fun days etc, the insurance is just so expensive due to claims.

Yes but you could pay insurance via a game licence or hunting organisation that should cover you.

So I was told by a friend who used to run motor sport and fun day events any insurance that covers you for all eventualities regarding serious injury or death is now so expensive it prices the sport out.
This obviously applies to relatively small events of no more than a couple of hundred but I could see it applying to the public hunting.
Can you imagine applying for insurance against either being shot or shooting someone when you wouldn't even know who or where anyone was on the land?

Not sure about this one - prefer to always be behind mine and others guns - it would have to be tightly regulated/organised - probably closed down to nothing less than DSC2 and then that's before the inherent British / old boy corruption kicks in......

Call me an old cynic..... :suss:

If you can pay for motor vehicle insurance then id thought the same would apply to hunting and the former is far more dangerous.

Well i came from a state that lost it and now trying to get it back. I now live in a state where you pay your license, get your gun and go hunting.

Slight difference in size ..your state is probably as big as our island with marginal less than our 60 odd million inhabitants ...:D

What public lands? Hell mate we've hardly got enough room in this country to pack the people in never mind find public lands that don't exist.

Nearly all land in this country is owned by somebody. Besides national parks which in the main are desolate moorlands filled with ramblers and dog walkers and little else the only large tracts of what could be construed as publicly owned lands are owned by the MOD and FC, and both these organisations already control the shooting on their lands.

Send us over several hundred million acres of game filled land and we'll think about giving it a go.

Well MOD land is out for obvious reasons but FC and National Parks are both hunted over here. So what is the issue?

About the same size. What is the really percentage of people going to be hunting on public land?

Irrelevant. For every hunter there are 10 ramblers wandering around objecting to anyone doing anything not currently thought PC at the BBC ;)

The public and the government are so far removed from reality over here.

Crikey mate we've got too many in this country and in particular in certain areas that already think that they can just go and shoot anywhere they want. Just think what it would be like if they opened up "public lands", you would literally be taking your life in your hands to go for a walk. :cuckoo:

We simply don't have the space for it, we're only a little jam packed country.

Well that's interesting. We don't have ramblers wondering what Madonna and Guy Richie were doing but we do have bushwalkers, motorbike riders, horse riders and 4WD. We all just learn to get along.

If public land was opened up as a free for all to hunt on you WOULD get shot.

The great thing about hunting on public land is the game is very wary and much harder to hunt. Doesn't mean people will get shot, far from it.

all fc land should be opened up to the public and mod land all you would need to do is apply for a free permit from the relevant office, they could even save money my getting rid of fc rangers

Looking at some of the wildlife control measures your government are able to introduce- poisoning wild dogs for example, you are definitely governed by people more in touch with the very real issues facing the countryside.
You try following the legitimate process to apply for a license for controlling birds of prey or excluding badgers for example- NO CHANCE.
