Hi all,
i have just ordered a new sako 85 in 6.5x55 i cant make my mind up between the wildcat, northstar or the ASE jet-z compact,
does anyone know which one reduces sound the most for the 6.5x55?
regards paul

Where are you Knifeman? I've got the same rifle and am very happy with the Mod I got for half the price of the ones you list.

I'm just testing the new Delta moderators from Roedale. Similar to the a-tec cmm they are modular, meaning one can take baffles out to lighten and shorten the mod if one wants to.
The baffle shape and design was developed at a University for applied physics in Germany and I must say they are very effective. http://www.roedaleprecision.com/epages/schalldaempfer.htm

Another good choice would be the tha new mod from Jager sports.
Check the weights of moderators, makes a huge difference in the field.

Whatever you do, buy a stainless steel one. Some of the ones offered have aluminium alloy shielded by a thin stainless plate, all I have read of them would make me steer well clear of them (unless you really like cleaning modertors) and buy a fully stainless steel one.

A friend of mine has the ASE Utra S5 and it is tiny compared to my T8 (two years old and no rust), another mate has the Wildcat in fully stailness steel and rates it. The Northstar gets good reviews by users, Njc on this site for one.

I am afraid the search for the perfect moderator goes on ;)

This is one of the ones I like at the minute.

It is a Jager Sporting Arms Ranger, the owner is on the site. The body etc are made from aircraft grade 7575 series alloy with stainless steel used for the primary blast baffles and the insert were it screws on to the barrel, it is a reflex/over barrel design. For only £175 they have got to be worth a look.

This is the front mounted one that I use.

It is a A-Tec CMM, the baffles can be added or removed for differing situations, when set up for my 243 it only weighs in at 385gms, not bad money at £195.

I had Wildcats and others, a friend has Jet Z Compacts. Wow!
I sold the others and now only have Jet Z Compacts.
I cannot recommend them strongly enough.
Solid construction and great sound reduction.

IMO Nothing is better than the PES T12 with regards to noise reduction, the balance is very good to, and the build quality is very high. At the moment I have a Ase S5 on my .243, small, and its 100gms lighter than a T8, but all the weight is right on the muzzle, It buggers the balance right up :( I am going for a T12 on the 6.5x55 I have on order, and Im happy I have made the right choice. The Border Barrles (MYM?) Stainless T8 looks rather nice, and the FC are using them - which counts for something (but always be wary, they dont always use the best ;)) but I have heard that they split, dont know how true that is though. The Ase Stuff is good, and I would go Northstar over JetZ, but thats just personnal prefence. I dont like Wildcat stuff, think they are rubbish. In weight, quality and noise reduction - but a great deal dont aggree

Try as many as you can on the calibre you want (or as close as you can get) and see what you like

This might be off use to you http://www.silencertests.eu/

I have a PES on my 260 rem, which is essentially the same rifle as 6.5 and it does a really good job, very quiet.

Thar correct me if i am wrong, but you top over the barrel mod is the same as the old A-TEC over the barrel mod? I use one of these on a .300 Win-MAG, superb and the A-TEC CMM- AL Muzzle mounted on my .25-06 again superb i give both mod's a :thumb:

IMO Nothing is better than the PES T12 balance is very good

Sam
What frigging planet you on? T12 good balance????? Now I agree with the rest of you comments with regards the T12 and I would add that you can always use one as a club to dispatch the deer if you need too.
My mate has one on his Tikka T3 and when compared to the two mods I use, he wished he never got the thing, it weighs a ton. Remember the one in the test is the Scout model but it still weighs in at 650gms, sound reduction was 25db while the A-Tec/Ranger was 550gms but gave a 30db sound reduction, it cost lest and is fully strippable. So why would I buy a PES?:???:

StalkerBoy
The Jager Ranger is a improved A-Tec over barrel, it has a stainless steel thread insert were the barrel screws on in lefthand thread. This is to stop it coming undone when you take it off, the rear mounting bush is easier to swap if you use it on one or more calibre and you don’t need any tools to strip it, it is made in Britain:british:, the best bit is that it costs £90 less.

Tahr,

The balance is better than anything else I have tried, It to me is like pointing a very heavy barreled rifle, maybe a wee bit more. Aye you could use them to club with thats true :D I want to try a titanium jobbie when I get the chance and I shall see how that does. I shall aggree to differ.

Sam

Watch the Titanium ones, some are no lighter than a “conventional moddy” and one make is 8” long all front mounted, which although it might be a little lighter but the fact that is all hanging of the front of the barrel would not feel like it. I did some work on a experimental Ti moddy about 18 months ago. ;)

Sam, Would that be the fully strippable, and fully stainless steel, T12 Scout that only weighs 560gms then? The one no one seems to mention?
