  1. Cold smoked

So will I need the curing agents to make venison sausage which will be cold smoked for a few hours for flavour but then cooked before consumption? Basically I make the sausages then hang them in the smoker overnight then vacuum pack, freeze and use them in casseroles or pot roasting them.
  2. Namibia?

I've hunted with Khomas Highland Hunting Safaris three times, Omuramba Hunting once and Eureka Hunting Safaris once and would recommend all three. Namibia is a dream to hunt, easy to take firearms into and out of if you can get them there after the Covid-19 situation. I always flew with SAA...
  3. Jacket or Smock ?

I just got a Deerhunter Pro Gamekeeper smock for the new season. Easy enough to get in and out of, large ventilation zips under each arm and the skirt it can be folded up and tucked under allowing for great leg freedom and useful on warmer days. It's thin so you can layer up or down underneath...

  5. 375H&H - Good reason and UK use?

I applied for my 375 and also a 300WinMag barrel after I saw a deal too good to refuse on a 375 in a local dealer. I paid a deposit and then applied for the variation to Avon and Somerset stating that I would like to use it in Africa and the one gun, two barrel combination would be perfect for...
  6. Wanted: Africa advice/suggestions

I'm off to Namibia in September. I prefer to look for and go for smaller operations that are family owned and run and are not the grandee outfitters that everyone goes to because of reputation. This year I am hunting to the north of the country, not far south of Etosha with Eureka Hunting...
  7. To moderate or not the pro’s and con’s

I haven't used a moderator for years. I'm not chopping the barrels of my rifles, they have open sights. I don't like the look or feel of a can on my barrel and it ruins the looks of a rifle, adds length and can get caught up at the wrong moment. You can wear ear defenders or ear plugs to save...
  8. Steiner vs Kahles vs Meopta , Scopes ?

I used my Meopta 3-9x40 in low light for the first time last month when I couldn't see the deer with my naked eye and I got my buck. I have just purchased a Steiner Ranger 2-8x42 illuminated for my .375 and have only had it a week so haven't used it yet but first impressions make me very happy...
  9. SAA now charging £202 to carry firearm from UK to Eastern Cape - write to persuade them to drop charges

Just for the hell of it I also contacted SAA regarding their new charges. I wrote thus: Dear Sir/Madam. I am writing to you to express my disappointment that SAA are now charging to carry firearms on your aircraft. I have used SAA for the last five years along with my family and have always...
  10. Mauser M18/12 243

I'm a Mauser fan and I've owned a wooden stocked M12 in 30-06 for several years and I cannot fault it. Yes it's more expensive than the M18 but it's worth it to have a quality rifle feel and performance. The bolt is slick, the trigger is crisp and the safety is easy and functional. It's...
  11. Africa advice please

Who was the outfitter? I'd like to look into them and see if I can find out more about them.
  12. Africa advice please

Sounds like you got stitched up. With everything due diligence is required. Plenty of research and questions need to be asked before committing any funds. I would suggest this is the exception rather than the norm and not widely practiced. There are hundreds of respectable and trustworthy...
  13. Flask recommendations please

To be honest, I find the cheap flasks in Asda for a fiver keeps coffee hot all day. Metal construction and liner. Bloody good.
  14. Travel cases

I found an SKB case on eBay a couple of years ago, originally bought for a musical instrument. I measured my rifle and it fitted so got it for £58 if memory serves me correctly. It's survived three trips to Namibia and I've also taken my shotgun as well as my rifle and both have survived...
