The course run in Hampshire does involve practical training scenarios (with dummy firearms, we all know you can pull the trigger). These role plays are perhaps the hardest bit for some folk, but really do give a good insight into what needs to happen in reality.
On the assessment day itself...
Think of Hik as a watercolour. Think of Nocpix as an oil painting.
I have a 640 sensor Ace scope (50) and the same Habrok binos. The Ace is 100% better every time and I can't wait for them to bring out a pair of decent multispectral binos because I will be moving to them instantly.
I'm not far away, and there aren't notable populations to my knowledge. Alresford, Winchester (west of) and beyond Petersfield, masses of them but there must just be some cracking deer managers in the Meon Valley!
The only assessment in this course appears be be in drafting a cull plan. That is already assessed in the Advanced Deer Management course.
Here, the culls are not independently verified - just recorded. Anyone could shoot the deer so long as you have your photo take next to it. They could have...
The more I look at this thing, the more incredulous I am.
Surely it is a sign of commercial bias that you get 6 credits for part 1 if you’ve done Jelen or Jones’ Advanced Deer management course but only 3 for the BDS one.
I think the target market for this course is twofold:
1. The paper collectors. Typically newcomers to the sport/profession. Want rapid progress from beginner to expert - zero to hero candidates. Will be able to talk the talk, but only a few will actually walk the walk. There will be some...
Fieldsports Britain, not untypically, is ahead of the gun on this. It's tabloid journalism, don't forget that.
The written answer in parliament from the HO does nothing to confirm that S2 will move to S1 beyond what the government already proposed in its June 2025 response to the 2023...
Its also seasonal. I really struggle getting people to buy whole (roe and muntjac) carcasses through the spring and summer. Come October, and I struggle to keep up with the order list.
Does anyone else remember a certain UK hunting guide (lovely fellow, genuinely) who posted a video online of himself dispatching a boar with a knife after leaping onto it from a tree (if memory serves). Think it was on here - must have been getting on for 15+ years ago now. Hastily deleted...
Do you have a link to the clip? Was it in a humane dispatch scenario, presumably (i.e. not following up on a shot/wounded deer out in the countryside?).
First priority is human safety - that of you and anyone around you. Using an knife, potentially in hand to hoof (or antler!) combat with a...
Gone very quiet in Hampshire this last few days. Cameras aren’t picking up anywhere near as much activity day or night and not heard more than the odd grunt. Weather probably to blame and could kick off again soon. Had been lots of activity, so perhaps they’re just getting their breath back.
Any rutty smell is mostly on the skin and if skinned fairly promptly (couple of days) then in my experience nobody notices once the meat is served up. But, an old buck is an old buck and best stewed or minced.
I’d also rather shoot a pricket or a doe.
Since they lost everyone’s data in a colossal breach and then did the old phoenix trick to avoid liability I have been very reluctant to use them. One expects more from a peer of the realm (or perhaps not…)
