  1. Patchy Bleaching

As soon as you take it out of the water to start it drying out it will lose weight. At least 10% from wet to dry with the majority of it going in the first few days. And as said before, it is just drying out so the peroxide colour will come once it has dried.
  2. First outing with open sights

Yes it’s a BRNO ZKK 601. Its the first rifle I ever bought and the weight difference is very noticeable compared to my Bergara, even without the scope and moderator. It was built in 1979 and I’m very much of the thinking that if something isn’t broken, don’t fix it. I only moved onto the...
  3. First outing with open sights

To say this has taken a while to get going would be an understatement! After stalking for what must have been about 15 years, I had decided back in 2021 that I wanted to see how my .308 would shoot with the iron sights that I had not yet even looked through, let alone fired at a target using...
  4. Taking out non stalkers

Having done it quite a lot with friends and family I would say that you should be prepared to point out nearly everything that you take for granted. I went out just the other afternoon with my 4 1/2 year old and it was amazing the things that I wouldn’t otherwise have said if it weren’t for her...
  5. Recreational stalkers only

Back before the wee one came along, I was only shooting about 7 roe a year. Having the DSC1 where I was able to sell on any extra venison, opened up the amount that I was able to take and I managed 35 - 40 roe per year over a couple of years. I work offshore so am only home for half of the year...
  6. Beginner roe skull prep

At the top of this page, have a look at the Preparing a head thread that csl has written. If you don't have a pressure washer, you can always just scrape off the meaty parts with a knife and pliers after boiling (but it takes much longer!) You can get 12% peroxide from a hairdressers supply...
  7. DIY larder inspiration

If its got a fan in there then it is supposed to be better. My larder fridge doesn't have a fan and the maximum time I have had a roe in there is just over 2 weeks (I wanted to see if it made the meat any better). It got a little bit of furry mould on the inside but that's all. Turns out that it...
  8. Skull prep

I wouldn't even bother. I do all my heads full skull so I don't 'clean' as far up as that. I leave mine to dry with peroxide on for 24hrs , wash it off and then it goes into the shed or garage for a bit after that. Never smells bad enough to think I haven't got it all out and it dries very...
  9. Newbie essentials

This. Add some bullets if you want to use the knife and a scope makes it a bit easier! When I got my own first rifle second hand it was a BRNO Zkk 601 without a moderator. Came with a sling and I think I was able to put on a 6x44 mm Meopta scope and bipod. Including 40 bullets I was £400...
  10. Wanted: Cast Roe antler wanted

Meant to ask, did you get one in the end? I’ve found one if you still want it.
  11. 2025 Roe Rut

Thought I would post a little write up of a day I had last year during the Roe rut as I am sitting offshore (doing very little due to issues) and Roe bucks are only a month away (if you are anywhere but Scotland anyway!) It was the 11th August and with the rut still pretty much in full swing up...
  12. Ahhhh, ain’t that nice 🫣

Bloody hell! £2,000 for an injured eye and £5,000 for a fractured leg! I'm in the wrong job!
  13. 4 Leg Shooting Sticks. Any good?

I went to the Limulus sticks from here and I will say they are a game changer if you have never used a set. I now use the 4 Stable Sticks (that my brother won somewhere) and again, they change quite a lot of your shooting, for the better I will say. No more trying to get steady on a fence...
  14. Wanted: Cast Roe antler wanted

I am sure I have one or two lying about in the garage. Only thing is I am offshore at the moment and wont be back to have a look for about 10 days. If anyone else has something in the meantime then great, otherwise I can send it once I'm back and I've had a look.
  15. When to take my daughter shooting

I took my daughter out the first twice on a walked up shoot when she was about 2 - 2 1/2 years old. No gun for me, had ear defenders for her and I had one of those toddler carriers that strapped her to my chest so it was easy to walk about and manage the two dogs. She came out about a month ago...
